PORTLAND, OREGON, SUNDAY MORNING, JANUARY 25, 192a 4 GOVERNMENT DBS GO BEGGING HERE BECAUSE LOW PAY Vacancies in Federal Service Due Because Uncle Sam Not Keep jng Pace With Living Costs. r Uncle Bam is having a hard time with the labor problem. . Popular as he used to be as an employer, with a steady position, canon ana bick leave, inia popu larity has exDcrlenced a decided fcslump in recent months. All because Uncle Sam's ealarlee haven't kept up .with those be In paid T private corporations. Mail carriers, for instance, are de- otdedly acarca in Portland and few there . are who seem eagef to relieve the shortage. Tet It has not been lone, " avers John S. Howe who conducts the .civil service examinations in Portland, since the office was swamped with ap plicants. . APPLICANTS BCAftOS h' Every day or so Howe receives notice from "Washington of the need of men' or women experienced In some particular tine, an! the date on which examination ; for such position will be conducted.: And . out of all the notices posted but few i applicants appear. Many times It Is because of the pe-! : cullar technical education and experience i required, for which but few are quail-' fled. Salaries . paid range from $2000 ' a year up with rapid promotion, but j . the civil service since the war does net! v: seem to appeal to textile experts, aero- I f tiautio experts, telephone and telegraph! li engineer, camouflage experts, assistant v-explosive chemists.? In Rome lines in "I which the government requires workers i : of especial training, the applicant is ! ' rriven a free training course in Wash ington, T. C, - preparing him for the position. PAT IS TOO SMALL Then," says Howe, "the person after Ivlng his training often works onlyfl a (ew montns lor uie government ana . then Accents a position with a nrivate . corporation which is looking for trained I , men." j Portland is located in the department pv having Jurisdiction over Oregon, Wash- ! ; Ington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming audi ' Alaska. Kxumlnatlons are conducted after due advance notice for positions hi the customs service, internal revenue department, engineering department, i. quartermasters' corps, lighthouse service, 'i navy yards, immigration, reclamation . aervlce, forest service, custodian and postal, either In . the departments at . Washington or for field service else-Jwbere.- - , . ' -' In Portland not many are taking' civil ; service examinations except for .local - ucrvic in the postofflce or custodian r service. The shortage In stenographers, typists nnd all kinds of accountants Is aeute.i Collection of the Income tax Is creating a great demand for accountants s in Portland and elsewhere. ',. Examinations for stenographers and typists are held every Tuesday and for field clerks In the forest service and reclamation service the second Thurs ' day of each month. Regardless of the end of the war and the discontinuance ; of many governmental departments, the t demand for clerical assistance has in no way diminished, says Howe. In Uncle Sam's service there are no strikes or lockouts, no laying off of .employment because of labor disturb ances. And the notices of positions to Ik: filled by civil service continue to flood the offices of the local branches. Leading Educators to Assist at Next 0. A.
