Firemea Arretted Had bo MTaUkey Acting on telegraphic instructions from authorities in San Francisco, Inspectors Gordon and Wrlgrht arrested Georgre Margraronls and Pete Pergonas, firemen on the steamer West Kader, Tuesday afternoon. Charged with receiving and concealing stolen goods, the two men will be held here for California officers. Information in the telegram referred to 24 quarts of whiskey which the inspect ors were asked to confiscate and hold as evidence. A thorough search of the lug gage of the two men failed to reveal the whiskey. India Dlkcnated at Beed "India and Industrial Mission" was the subject of the second Reed college meeting held Tuesday to hear reports of the Pes Moines convention, Maurice Howard and Tom Brock way speaking on this phase of the missionary subject. Consider able interest is being shown In the con vention reports, especially since several Reed college graduates are now In for eign lands. Thursday's noon meeting will consider medical and . missionary missions. Katharine Kerr and Mary Elizabeth White will report these phases of the. Pes Moines conference. Lecture on national Forests In the auditorium of the Portland Y. M. C. A. tonight Albert Welsendanger will lec ture on "Recreation in the National Forests." He will demonstrate the helio graph and Osborne flash signals, and will also show other Instruments by which men in the service overcome the difficulties of the work. He will show some fine slides also. The meeting Is open to the public and is under the auspices of the association service de partment. Those unable to find experi enced pruners are asked to phone or visit the inspector's office at room 152 courthouse. That fruit trees in the yards of nearly every home In Multno mah county have been badly neglected, both as to pruning and spraying, is the opinion of tht inspector. Aladdla Fill Fsnd Grows Public sub scriptions for the Aladdin fill In North Portland continue to come in, the total received to date being $14,400, according to William H. Crawford, manager of the department of industries of the Chamber of Commerce. The third let ter soliciting aid is being sent out by the department today, and it is believed that this will bring in the additional $10,000 needed to complete payment for the work. Lertare in Swadenborg "The Power of Expression to Promote Health," third lecture by William R. Keece on the principles and methods of attaining spiritual health, will be given this eve ning at the Central library, room H, at 8 o'clock. These lectures are based on the teachings of the great philosopher Kmanuel Swedenborg, whose scientific writings of 130 years ago are now being edited as aids to the study of modern science by his alma mater, the University of Upsala, Sweden. Hunters Are Arrested Victor Bergcr son, William and Frits Braum and Wal te McDonald, all of Beaver Creek, Co lumbia county, were arrested Sunday by District Warden Clark and Deputies William Brown and Charles Dilg for hunting deer during closed season. Sev eral hides, parts of venison and the pris oners' guns were confiscated. The game law violators will be given a hearing at St. Helens Saturday. Highway Is Described Beauty of the Columbia river highway in Oregon is brought home to Ladles of the Mac cabees iodge in the November-Decem ber issue of Us national publication, the LadleH' Review. The Ladles' Review, published in Port Huron, Mich., prints a 6x10 inch highway view on its cover. Inside Is an article describing the high way's many scenic wonders. Charske Ia Comptroller F. W. Charske has been appointed comptroller of the Union Pacific system and all affiliated lines by the board of directors of the Union Pacific, according to announce ment received this morning by local rail road officials. Charske will have offices in New York city. Both Hands Severely Burned Marvin G. Wood, aged 32, 856 Mallory avenue, while working on wires under the Steel bridge, suffered severe burns to both hands when he encountered ahort cir cuit about 4:15 Tuesday afternoon. Wood was taken to St. Vincents hos pital. 12000 Raised for Convention Kiwanls club members have subscribed $2000 for preliminary expenses of the Interna tional convention to bo held In Portland next June. She asked 2000. L TRANSFERRED TO IT ARTILLERY Ashland, Medford, Marsh field and Newport Companies Will Form Battalion Under Vance. Orders have been issued by the adjutant general of the National Guard of Oregon for the transfer ring of the military companies of the Third Oregon in Ashland, Marshfield and Medford to the coast artillery corps, which, with a new company to be formed in Newport, will con stitute a battalion under command of Major J. Vance, with headquar ters at Medford. Company B, at Ashland, will be known as the First company of the C. A. C. It is commanded by Captain Millard W. Grubb, First Lieutenant William M. Briggs and Second Lieuten ant Lynn D. Mowwat. The Second company is : at Medford, and was Company D of ttye Third Ore gon. It is commanded by Captain H. A. Canaday, First Lieutenant M. C. Wright and Second Lieutenant V. B. Marshall. The Third company, C. A. C, of Marshfield was formerly Company A, new Third Oregon. It is commanded by Captain Ben S. Fisher. First Lieu tenant George C. Higglns and Second Lieutenant C. J. Larson. The Fourth company will be organized by Captain William Matthews at Newport. The different companies of the new Coast Artillery corps are thus desig nated as they were before the world war. The Third Oregon will also have Its old designations restored. Company A is to be at McMinnville under Captain James C. Shirley and some experienced overseas veterans. Company I is to be at Silverton, where many of the old Company 1 came from. It will be commanded by Captatn G. Todd, First Lieutenant A. H. Young, Second Lieutenant A. I. Dahl. Com pany L Is to bave its old stand at Dallas under Captain Robert Kreson. Company B is to hatfe itu old position and quarters In the Armory In Port land, under Its former captain, F. M. West. Company I of this city, under Captain C. E. F.
