Expenses to Be Paid
By Private Citizens
Albany, Jan. 8. Member of th. farm
bureau of Linn county at a luncheon
conference held In Albany Wednesday
decided to finance the office of the
county agricultural agent by private sub
scription, the request to the county court
to include that office in the annual bud
get having been denied. . Thla will make
the third year that the farmer and busi
ness men of the county have contributed
the proportion of the county agent's ex
pense which la supposed to be borne by

tually pledged themselves to raise $100
each, $500 being subscribed before the

Slot Machine : Owner
' Convicted by Jury
A Jury tn the municipal court held that
the slot machine operated in the cigar
tore of Fred Frits, Second and Burn
slde streets, was a' gambling device, find
ing Fritz guilty after a prolonged trial
Wednesday afternoon before Judge Ross
man. Because of the late hour, sen
tense waa. not passed; and the case will
be concluded today. Nine other store
keepers have been arrested for operat
ing similar machines.

Leases were signed Wednesday which
gtve the Abstract Title company- posses
sion of the ground floor location at M
Fourth street, on February 1. The space
leased is now occupied by the F. EL Tay
lor Real Estate company. The Taylor
company will take new quarters In the
Yeon building after i February 1.
The space leased by the Title company
comprises about BOO square feet and.
according to officials of the concern,
will serve their needs to better advan
tage than the present location at 295
Stark street. The lease runs for five
years.

of property in the Peachland Acreage I
Thomas and R. C. Eakin, alleging that

his land without his permission. He
asks a restraining order and three times

age cut, asserting that other damage
has been done to his property.

Customs Collector,
Dies at Marshfield
Marshfield, Jan. 8. W. A. Clark, dep
uty United States collector of customs for
this port, died suddenly at his home here
Wednesday. While he was In his of
fice he suffered an attack of heart
trouble. He was taken home, rested on
. the sofa and died. He was a native of
Ohio, 54 years old, and leaves a wile
v arid son. Chester TL Clarke. He had
been on the coast many years and was.
In the customs service for the past id
years, mostly in Portland, and before
that in the sheriffs office at Portland.
He has been on Coos Bay two years
' and waa popular here. The body will
be taken Friday morning to Portland
and the funeral will be from the Fin
lay, chapel there.
Captain A. A. Sawyer, master of the
tanker J. A. Chanslor, which was
wrecked at Cape Blanco, was here over
night from Bandon, where he has been
recovering from exposure. Captain Saw-
. yer would see no one and did not leave
his room at the hotel until he caught an
outgoing train.
