V . 1 .1 .l TIID OREGON DAILY. JOURNAL. PORTLAND. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1913. WILL BE BUILT AT , Vancouver Company Obtains Con tracts From Standard Oil Work ' to Continue for Some Time. , Contracts for three tank steamers k for the Standard Oil company of "aVow Jersey have been accepted by the G. M. Standifer Construction , corporation, and the vessels are to be built In th 'steel yards at Van ? couver within the next year, accord- ;in,to Guy M. Standifer, president : of the company, who returned from New York Christmas day. Standi ' f er Is at the Benson hotel. . Ths vessels will be of 12,000 tons dead- ' welr'ht capacity, the largest vessels ever contracted forjn the Columbia district. f and anions; the largest ever built on the coast ' Thu thrM. with the Green Star con tracts for five steamers, will give work at the Standifer plant for trie next year, Standifer said today. The Vancouver yard is now completing three steamers ' for the Emergency Fleet corporation, one of which is to be launched in a few days, '-and the other two next month. - FIRST LAUNCHED IIT MAECH " ' The first of the Green Star freighters will come off in March. The Btandard ' Oil vessels will be used on the east coast, probably between Mexico. Texas and New' York. , . The Vancouver plant employes 8500 men. and this force will probably be em ployed until all the work now on hand is completed. The outlook after 1920 for i shipbuilding in this district Is not en : couraglng, Standifer said, and not the least of the difficulties confronting- oper ators Is the Wage question. "TTirhertwases are being paid here for shipbuilding than anywhere else In the world," he said, "and the only reason we are getting contracts now is because the yards of this country and England have all the business they can handle at pres ent However, these contracts were ob tained by the closest kind of competitive bidding, and when the tonnage situation eases off as a result of present building, we will be up against world competition." PRODUCTION SERIOUS QUESTION Standifer explained that the wage question Is not so serious as that of pro duction. The production rate In the yards is slow, and with short hours the labor end of the shipbuilding business is the most expensive phase. y Standifer will leave Sunday for San Francisco on a business trip of a week, but expects to be with' Mra Standifer In Portland all winter. FOG DELAYS ROSE CITY Anchored 18 Hours Only Short Dls i tance From Portland. The passenger liner Rose City reached Alnsworth dock at 11 :30 this mornlna; Irom San Francisco, with about 100 passengers and full freight holds. The Hose City left As toria at 7 o'clock Friday morning and, until tt was anchored, had to proceed very slowly because of the murk. ,-- On Its last trip up the Columbia the Rose City had a battle with the Ice, ' but the fog he encountered this time Captain T. MacQenn considers the worse opponent to schedule. Because of the delay, both at San Francisco from loading so much cargo and the fog In the Columbia, the Rose City will leave down again at 8 o'clock Sunday night ' Steamer Mayfalr Leaking The steam schooner Mayfalr, which left out of Astoria last Monday, reached i Han Francisco in a leaking condition ' late Friday, after 116 hours at sea. AKIRS AMASS FORTUNE ROM SKINS OF RABBITS REPRESENTE Two Men Arrested at Pendleton Swindled Wealthy Salt Lake People With Fake Furs, Claim. Salt Lake, Dec. 27. The police have been advised of the arrest at Pendleton, Or., of two men believed to be fake fur peddlers, who fleeced persons in this vicinity of between 130.000 and 140.000 during the Christmas shopping season. Representing themselves as British sailors, the fakirs approached their well- to-do victims with the greatest caution, carrying their furs In a huge canvas sack. They told an Interesting story or having gone to Russia for the express purpose of smuggling out a large quan tity of expensive furs, or capture by tne Red guard, a sentence to death and romantic rescue by the fair daughter of the commanding officer. Departing, they pledged their victims to absolute secrecy, aa the furs had been smuggled into the country and all con' ceraed might be in danger of arrest Their operations came to the notice of the police after three Salt Lake phy slclans who had invested 800 became suspicious and took their wares to local turner ror appraisal. The pur chases were at once pronounced rabbit skina, with an occasional cat skin, all skilfully decorated to look like ermine, silver fox and other expensive furs.
