' J Beaseley furnished considerable amusement for the spectators at the trial as he narrated hla experiences at the hostelry in question during his four ; yearsWestdence there. Seemingly reluctant at first to disclose his advent urea, Beaseley warmed to the subject ' under direct examination and f grew 'exceedingly voluble and reminis cent. " - TALES ABE BELATED On cross-examination, directed by John H. Stevenson and Robert Maguire, some : of the" colored roan's earlier statements suffered flat contradiction. When this 5 fact wa brought to his attention and he was asked If he Knew what perjury was, Beaseley In turn asked the cross-examiners, with reproachful scorn If it wasn't possible that they had ever made mis takes. Wherever later statements con f licted with former testimony Beaseley Imperturbably pleaded a mistake and ' asked leave, to correct pne or the, other so' as to have thenf conform. There is no reason to believe the president himself has changed his mind about intervening In Mexico but con gress Is represented as restless and anxious to do something. So is the war department, but what about the lead ers of the Republican party who feel that in . the present session of congress they must make good the pledges they made in the 1918 campaign. Can they reduce taxes? There is grave doubt whether they can do so even' though America doesn't have new war. There Is certainly that war- with Mexico will not reduce taxes. This, to be sure, is altogether apart from the fine merits of the controversy with Mexico, for while a good many men in congress think the situation below the Itlo Grande should be cleaned up . they would prefer to wait until after the 1920 elections, by which time perhaps there may not be so many calls for fed ! eral troops to put down Industrial dis , turbances inside the United States and to afford protection, to the many gov ernors of states who are calling for I troops for various purposes. They rea- j son that inasmuch' as America has j ! waited seven yearg she can wait still i more to tackle the Mexican problem. PRESIDENT MAT PASS BUCK i It would not be surprising, however, f- to find the president passing the buck to i j the Republican congress on the Mexican ! ' situation, especially In view of the jeal- ' I ousy exhibited by the senate in the re-: cent league of nations controversy con cerning the right of congress to conduct America's wars. Nor Is it certain that congress Is going to adopt a resolution . declaring the war with Germany at an! end. Some of the opponents of the peace j treaty are flaunting that threat. But it i is an empty threat at best, for the truth ! is the house was kept in. session just be- fore the senate voted on the peace treaty recently, and the proposal to adopt a res olution declaring the war at an end was alscussed In a friendlv cnnferenM he. rtween the Republican and Democratic leaders. On the house side it Is reliably reported that at the end of the confer ence Republican leaders Gillette and Mendell saw so - many complications ahead that they begged their senate col leagues not to put up such a proposition to the public, and they didn't. PEACE PACT NECESSARY And another interesting fact is that more than, one third of the house mem bers will vote against such a. resolution, thus -clearly demonstrating the impossi bility of overriding the president's veto. for it is a foregone conclusion that Mr. ! Wilson will not accept a resolution by ! KRAZY KAT (Copyright. 1918, by Interna tional Feature Serric, Inc.) By Herriman i&te-.' A strange feature of. the case was the fact that Kamm's twin hrother and his sister-in-law, who is a jster of the plaintiff as well, testi fied supporting the contentions of Mrs. Kamm. The Kamms lived in apartments here at the fashionable Fairmont hotel. On one occasion, she swore, she returned from church to find Kamm entertaining some friends while clad only in pajamas. She asked him to dress and he swore at her, saying, "you are too pure to be my wife." 1 She alleged that Kamm swore at her in -public and struck her.
