To get to Portland we had to motor 190 miles across the Owyhee des ert from McDermot to Caldwell, Idaho, to take the train. A lot of homesteads have been taken up and they are talk ing of building a railroad through there. About 30,000 acres are being reclaimed by irrigation. There are a great many homesteads and mining claims. At pres" net u is aimoet impossible to get to Portland from the south. One must either drive 200 miles or more by auto, or go around to Sacramento or Salt Lake." "You can say I am very much impressed with Portland," said one of the brothers. Ramsdell returned to the forest service Tuesday, after 22 months' service in France with the 20th engineers.
