City Officials Flee
From Drumwright to
Escape Fury of Mob

Cushinir. Okla., Sept. 23. (I. N. S.)
Mayor Nlcodemus and several of the
officials of Drumwright, Ckla., have
fled to this place to escape the fury of
a mob which late Monday took posses
sion of the town. All wires to Drum
bright, according to the telegraph com
panies, have been taken over or cut by
the mob.
The mob organised In sympathy with
telephone strikers, and, after a picket
rmd hwn struck bv an officer, threats
of lynchlngs were made. The mayor
and other officials were given until 10
.o'clock Tuesday morning to resign. Be
fore that hour, however, they had es
caped from the tow.n after spending a
part of the right In Jail for their own
protection.
Veterans of 148th
Field Artillery Are
Now in Organization
Organisation of veterans of the 148th
field artillery was completed Monday
night at a meeting at Central library hall.
The officers are : President, Andrew
Harr ; vice president, Charles W.
Haugsten ; treasurer, William P.
Choato ; secretary, Joseph A. Nelsz ;
Eergeant-at-arms, Walter E. Wlesendan
ger. The name to be adopted for this or
ganization will be presented for vote at
the next meeting, which will be held at
the red room, Hotel Benson, at 8 :30 p. m.,
October 7. All former members of the
organization are eligible to membership
. and participation.
A Vote of thanks was also taken in he
half of the ladies' auxiliary of the 148th
field artillery.

Hood River Woman Hurt
White Salmon. Wash., Sept. 23. A
car driven by Portland people whose
names were not ascertained and in which
Mrs. B. Davidson of Hood River was a
paosenRer. went off the grade on the
Bluff road Sunday evening. Mrs. Da
vidson suffered a fractured shoulder and
the other occupants of the car were se
verely bruised.
Portland Men Fined
Following Wild Ride
Salem, Sept. 23. R. Bailey, H. A.
F.eid and Tom Foley, all of Portland,
were arrested on a charge of disorderly
conduct, Monday night, when they ran
wild In a red automobile at the State
Fair grounds camp, endangering the
lives of campers. They pleaded guilty
in justice court this morning and were
fined $25 each. This was the only un
toward incident in the first day of the
state fair.

Salem. Sept 23. Edgar Freed of Fort
land was today permanently admitted to
practice of law in Oregon on an order
Issued by the supreme court. Permits to
practice in Oregon for the probationary
period were granted to Oscar G. Liarson
of Silverton, who comes in on a Montana
certificate, and Ancel C. Jones of Fort
land, admitted on a certificate from In
diana.
Oarston & Earles Buy
State Highway Bonds
Salem, Sept, 23. The state treasurer's
office Monday completed the sale of
$2,000,000 worth of state highway bonds
to Carston Earles of Seattle. This
is a part of the $10,000,000 bond issue
authorised by the last legislature . for
construction of good roads in Oregon.
Two Lines in Oregon
Are Short 464 Cars
Salem, Sept 23. The Southern Pacific
company is short 252 cars and the S. P.
& S. is short 212 cars today, according
to reports received by the public service
commission.
Wife Causes Hubby's Arrest
Steven D. Powell was arrested this
morning at 7S0 Fiske Btreet by Deputy
.Constable Vatldns on a charge of as
mult and battery preferred by his wife.

roll of Standard Oil Co. of In
diana, on Whiting Platform.

Three Chlcagroans, accidentally
trapped, confessed today to a rob
bery of 1234,000 from the .mails.
Officers recovered $93,620 of the
loot and went in search of th re
mainder when the prisoners told
where it was cached. With the aid
of a postal clerk the men exchanged
pouches at Whiting, Ind., last
Thursday, taking the pouch con
taining $234,000 to meet the payroll
of the Standard Oil company of
Indiana.
The men held are Teo and Walter
Filipkowski and John S. Wejka. Wejka
is a mail clerk and is implicated in al
leged confessions as the man who pre
pared the fake mall pouch and ar
ranged matters so the one containing
the money could be identified by Filip
kowski when tossed from the train
Whiting.
Automobile Thieves
Get Jail Sentences;
Parole Ineffective
"In the future automobile thieves are
going to spend some time in jail," said
Presiding Judge Oatens Monday, as he
sentenced George Davis and C. W. Whit
tier to 30 days each in the -county jail.
Both men had pleaded guilty to theft of
-several automobiles.
"Paroling men for these offenses has
not proved effectual in the past," re
marked the judge.
Coal Shortage
Has Paralyzed
City of Vienna
Vienna. Sept. 23. -(I. N. S.) This
city is completely paralyzed by the coal
shortage. The tram cars have stopped
runtung and the factories are threatened
with a shutdown. Half , a million work
men are compelled to walk to and from
their work.
The horse cab drivers are threatening
to strike, demanding $10 as the minimum
fare, no matter how short the distance.

Now Sole Owners
Detroit, Mich., Sept. 23. (I. X. S.)
Charles E. Corenson. general manaper
of the Ford tractor plant, announced this
afternoon that Henry Ford and hia eon,
Etlsei, are now the sole owneui of the
Ford Motor Company, Mayor James
Couens the only minority stockholder
having aold his stock to Mr. Ford today.
The price paid for the block waa not
given out.
Rub-a-Dub-Dub!
The Boy Scout fife, durn and bugle
band, wlftch sprang into being last
spring, has commenced practice, meet
it. g twice a week. The next meeting
will be held in The Auditorium Satur
day at 1 :30 p. m. A. P. Goes has been
employed as bandmaster and James E.
Brockway predicts membership of the
band will soon swell to from 150 to 200.
