Henthorne returned t-o Portland this week. Miss Henthorne will be remembered as the librarian of the children's department at Cen tral library before entering service two years ago. With her sister, Miss Orll Elsie Henthorne, who was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the Portland woman was privileged to he assigned to a combat division, and their experience overseas included relief work with a field hospital unit at the front. Under fire, canteen service In ruined villages, the wit nessing of the great American bar rage during the last of the Argonne defensive and the unique experience of following their division Into the Oerman territory with the army of occupation. IX CHALOITS-SUE-MARUE .Beginning with service for 10 days in the ruined village of Chalons-sur-Marne, Miss Henthorne was sent to I,es Tslettes where the canteen was established in a I shattered peasant's cottage, the furni ture of which consisted of one plate glass, nilrror, strangely disfigured, one bench and an old picture. In one room lived an old mademoiselle, 83 years old, partially demented. This same building furnished quarters for an officers' billet. The canteen service table was Impro vised by the use of a board placed across the window sill, from which the hot drinks of chocolate and coffee were served through the window opening. WATCHED HISTORICAL DRIVE On November 1 the two Henthorne sisters arose at 3 a. m. and went to the hilltop, where, with two other workers, .they watched the barrage which has gone down Into history irr the great American defensive of the Argonne drive. They Witnessed the shifting lights of the horizon, which was for miles illuminated with weird fires of bursting, shells and star shells, as well as the signal fire in the valley below. They experienced the deafening roar and reverberation' of the guns, and at the zero hour realized that the Americans were going over the top and heard the return fire of the German counter barrage. Then they hastened back to their post to work with the wounded as they were brought back, supplying them with hot chocolate made outside , the dressing tents on an open fire and carried Into the tents in marmite cans. The human side of the scene, the gratitude of the men who, In many cases, had not had a hot drink in 24 hours, Is one of the deep est Impressions brought back by Miss Henthorne, who snatched a few mo ments' sleep that night on a narrow lit ter, brought from the seriously wounded ward. LUXEMBOURG EXT Following the cessation of hostilities. Miss Henthorne went with the division to Luxembourg, where she worked in canteen service at Larochette. The "Y" workers were housed in the home of a pro-Prussian family, whose ancestral portraits, with their powdered hair. Iron crosses and their military aspect, looked down upon them from the walls during their work. Here Miss Hen thorne had charge of the money ex change, often having to change the money of three countries for a Yankee boy who wished to send home his allot ment. At Neuweid It became the duty of the canteen workers to supply make up, costumes, musical Instruments and stage equipment for the various troupes of entertainers which were organized among the men of the A. K. F. COBLEXZ HEADQUARTERS At Cobleni a large headquarters of supply was established, which employed 12 German dressmakers and secured the output of four musical instrument fac tories for Its soldier-actors. It was dif- ficult to secure grease paint, and the commodity bad become so rare in Ger many that it was necessary to buy it wherever possible, ana orten n naa to come from Paris. The Second division had a record of supplying 125 cinema performances per week in August, when the service was . discontinued with tho army of occupation. Miss Henthorne arrived in New York with her sister August 16. and has been visiting throughout the Kast before re turning to Portland. Before going over seas, she waa stationed with the Amer ican Library association for 10 months In Washington, f. C.. and also worked under Mrs. Finley J. Shepard as acting secretary , with the Training Camp Ac tivities, her work being similar to that of liaislon officer between the men of the U. S. navy and the American Library association. Movie Studio Planned For Beaver Film Co. Property at the northwest corner of Thirteenth and Raleigh streets consist ing of an improved tract 100 by 100 feet In area, has been leased by the Beaver Film company, a California concern. The Beaver company proposes making extensive improvements and will es tablish a studio for the purpose of re producing Oregon scenic films.
