To aid the helpless women and chil
dren of France a fund will be raised In
Portland through the cooperation and
activity of the Portland Ad club, the
Rotary club, The Klwanls club and the
Oregon Civic league.
This announcement was made In the
form of a challenge by W. P. Stranborg,
who has been appointed chairman for
' Oregon, and the. fund will be given to
the American ' women's hospital service
in France, which is now extending its
work into Serbia- Through some over
sight, the call for the support of this
work was not made public until Wed
resday and Oregon, which has given so
generously to every other fund of this
nature, has not yet given anything to
the American women s nospiiai service
hrna.d. The olan is to see which of
the clubs in- the contest will be able' to
raise 11000 for the fund, and as Oregon's
quota Is $5000 the work will not be of
long; duration. Voluntary subscriptions
made at the Ad club luncheon on Wed
nesday amounted to $125, but the active
drive does not begin until next Wednes-

Kidnapping Feared
Albany, Aug. 21. Considerable excite
ment was aroused in Albany Wednes
day when 10-year-old Frances Sparling
was picked up by a man in an automo
bile and taken out of town. Sheriff
Kendall was advised that she had been
kidnapped. . The little girl was staying
with friends while her mother was cook
ing for a threshing crew. The supposed
kidnapper turned out to be a friend
of the family who took Frances out for

Mrs. Gist Suffered Complete
Breakdown; Gains 33 Pounds

so dreadfully nervous I could get no

me and I lost weight until I was almos

sent for my mother in Oregon to come
here and stay with me and when she
got here I was down in bed, hardly
able- to raise my head from the pillow.
Mother said she had several friends in

few days I started to get hungry Then

could feel my strength rapidly return
