THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL IS MONDAY. AUGUST 41919. PORTLAND. OREGON i I I J f FREIGHT SWITCHING CHARGES ARE TO BE PUT INJEF FORM Preparations Are Being Made-to Simplify Complicated Matter by Chamber of Commerce. Preparations are being made by the department of Industries of the Chamber of Commerce to compile a comprehensive brief on freight switching charges in and about Portland bo that representa tives pf industrial plants seeking a lo cation here may be able to determine the sites suited to his business. The statement was made by W. H. Crawford, manager of the bureau, that great difficulty has been found rece'ntly In handling industrial prospects because of the inability to supply them with im mediate information on switching -charges in Portland. In the past representatives of Indus trial concerns desirous of locating in Portland have had to spend many days working out the switching charges from the 14 volumes of freight tariffs com piled by the railroads to cover freigli charges In this district. 'There are seven districts within Port land in which various local freight switching charges are effective in addi tion to the inbound and outbound rates from the separate zones." said Craw ford. "It is the intention of this depart ment to compile maps and explanations "so the entire district can be made clear with 15 minutes' study. "Each district has its advantageous points for various classes of industrial work. One district is more suited to handling 'California shipments than another and yet this same district would be disadvantageous for the' location of a factory sending out a majority of Kast rn shipments." The department of industries intends to prepare 11 maps in explanation of the district. One will make an explanation of all local shipping charges and the other 10 will treat, each switching dis trict separately in the matter of in bound movements .of freight.
