By Hymaa U. Cohea An enormous increase in the acreage bf berries is being planned all through the Pacific Northwest states and espe cially in the Willamette , valley as a result f the extreme prices' now being offered and paid. : Because of the huge demand from the juice producing compaTiles, the percent age ot increase " is greatest in logan berries, but the raspberry acreage is being increased at a rapid pace. Efforts are being made to contract evops during the next few years, but growers are not Inclined to tie up their holdings, ' because values offered - are said to be somewhat below the present Standing. Much of the increased acreage is be- lng set out by Japanese, - who are at present practically in control of the small fruit business, not tmly of the Pacific Northwest but pf the" entire Pacific coast. Reports indicate that they are leasing .much more land in j Eastern Multnomah and Columbia river counties. WORLD IS GREATLY DECREASED IN 1919 Total Output Not Likely to Be Mere Than 6,000,000 Cases Compared With 10,000,000 a Year Ago Better Run Now In Columbia. The year 1919 is likely to go into his tory as the season for the smallest pack of canned salmon that the trade of the Pacific eoast has known since the in dustry became firmly established. The entire world's pack is not ex pected to reach above u.000,000 cases. -compared with about 10.000,060 eases a year ago. Columbia rirer packers era about 10 to IS per cent short as compared with this time a year ago. but as the season will not close until August 25 and the present run is a Tery fa Torable one, it is quite .possible that not only will the Columbia river packers put up as much salsaao as a year ago, but that a small in crease may be shown. One or two of tne packers base a small in crease orer last season's output at this time, but this is due to the fact that they base secured many fish from the t roller outside the riser. Reports front Oregon ' eoast' streams indicate a demoralized condition among salmon packers. The Rogue riter p to a very short time ago had packed only about 7000 cases, compared with- last year's output! of 80,000 cases. On Alsea bay the; hrt practically done so packing because of a strike of the fUiiermen. Pucet Sound packers report practically no pack to date and the outlook for tlte remainder of the season is far from hopefuL Latest reports from Western Alaska, in7 the Tidnity of Bristol Bay, say that the season there lias been the most dismal failure that packers have known. Home hare already shut up shop with a pack that is estimated 26 to 40 per cent short of a year aco. Southwestern Alaakan reports are to the ef fect that packers there are abont half short of a year ago, but the season there will con tinue for some time and it may be possible to increase this output somewhat. Just, where the public is going to get it re quirements of canned sahnen is not taown. Packers have greatly oversold their peeks. Most of them bare orders for their normal output and rlhis season's pack is far below that. Sensational Rise Forced in Cotton "New York. Aug. "1. (I. N. S. -Cotton made a sensational advance of 200 points soon after the opening of the market today as s re sult of the government condition report. The report showed 67.1, a decline, of 2. points for the month. As this condition was not expected, there was a scramble by shorts at the opening and an advance of 100 points was recorded. Within 15 minutes prices soared at 200 point above the opening, at which point the advance was checked. Range by Overbeck A Cooke company,, of Trade building. Board Open. High. Low. Close. This means that alfalfa cannot - possibly be landed in Portland below $29.50 a ton. While there is very little activity among hay buyers of the coast to purchase alfalfa at pre. vailing prices, growers are able to secure much business right in their home sections. In the livestock districts actual business in alfalfa is reported as high as 830 a ton and aom are holding back for still higher quotations. Portland and Puset Hound millers are pur chasing but little wheat at thia time. While most of them are in the market for new crop at the government price, many growers are showing a disposition ta ask a premium aad some of the country mills are said to be paying it ' Growers are fvguriug upon getting a pre mium from the governmeut by holding a whist, but it is not likely that thia premium will be available, except at such time as supplies are congested and growers are unable to market their supplies promptly.
