In dollars It involves an expenditure of nearly four millions,: It consists chiefly of 7, street Improvement and sewer exten sions. Borne of it was kept In abey ance durlnsr the war period; but a large amount is of recent growth. ',. . There . are 29 sewer system projects , for which estimates have been filed, i- aggregating In' estimated cost $1,080,603, and 26 systems not yet filed which to- tal $1,422,000. making a grand total of S 2,502,603 for sewers. In the matter of street Improvements . 4 projects- segregating $550,933 have been filed and are under way and 100 .- projects not yet filed amount to $691, - 491. The total of street improvements ! is $1.22,424. BIO B18TBICT ACCOMMODATED ' The large amount of sewer work is an outgrowth of the drainage canal which is to be cut between the Colum bia slough and the river. This opens " up a large district which has been re - tarded in its development by reason of ' lack of drainage. ' The cutting of the 'canal itself involves an expenditure of '$300,000. The contract has already been let. Subsidiary to this main canal is the East Thirteenth street trunk sewer system which if Is estimated will cost "$450,000. Another system which will f empty into" the canal Is the East This- ty-thlrd and Stafford system, costing aOOUY SZ&U.UVU. These two sewer systems, win take care of the district between Union ave- due. Forty-second street, , KUIIngsworth and Columbia slough. AUTOMOBILE IS CArSB t . Another big sewer project is the SIx P ty-thlrd and Hal Bey street trunk which - Involves an estimated expenditure of .. $350,000. Another project Is the Harold ' avenue ' and Fifty-fifth avenue south- east, - which . will cost approximately $160,000. ' Of the street improvements about 70 , per cent will consist of pavement, scat tered over a wide territory and con sisting chiefly of connecting up odd ends of unpaved streets. The principal cen- ter will be in the Uewellyn school dls ' trlct between Duke avenue and Roman street, and all west of MHwaukie street and the river, s About . $72,000 will be spent here.'. . Not only does the motor vehicle create a Demand for paved county and state high ! ways, but it requires paved streets in the city. ' . ' - 5 There Is also a close connection oe f tween sewers and Improved streets in 6 which sewer construction takes prece- dence. Before a street can be improved it is necessary that the sewer be in-- stalled, as it would not be- good trast l ness to pave a street and then tear it f all up to put down a sewer. r Commerce Oh ami) e r.
