PORTLAND, OREGON, SUND AY MORNING, JULY 13, 1919. 1 E o THE THIRD FLOOR SWEATER SHOP IS SHOWING THE NEW RIPPLE SWEATERS U -9 1 CO TO SEA MARIN RECRUITS ME ON SHORE FIRST They Must Sail Imaginary Ocean On Sandy, Palm-Treed Island Before They Tread Real Deck, ALL' GO TO JRAININfc SCHOOL Regular Routine of Instruction Is Followed, After WhicfK Aspir , ants Become Real Sea Dogs. Marina recruits, of the present and ; future, must go to .sea on dry land ,? before they can ever aspire to go to sea on real water. They must sail milea ; and I milea of Imaginary ocean on a ' sandy, palm-treed island in the safety of their wooden, double decked bunk i houses before being assigned to real. shin i duty, accord inr to new plans of the authorities of the marine corps. Originally the men serving- under the eagle, globe and anchor were. Intended for ship duty. The little unpleasantness . with. Germany deflected them from their original purpose, while the exigencies of war sent into their ranks and their Hall of Heroes many men who didn't know their starboard bow from their wrist watch.: Now . with the war over, the' soldiers of the sea are coming back to their first love the battleship, and they! can step out In their nifty blue uniforms and take their place aboard the great leviathans. . So a dry land , school for seagoing marijnes was opened at Paris Island, . C., and already has turned out a . number of finished products who have ' sailed away to foreign shores. SLEEP IX HAMMOCKS The 200 or more men In the training ehool actually sleep in hammocks, and their first; lesson is how to properly lash up their hammocks with a rope so they may be out of the way during- the day. -.- Here's the way the average day runs for the recruit:-" i Reveille at 5:30 a. m. ' A brisk period of . excreta la ' followed bv breakfast : assembly for school at 7:30, 45 minutes! Is then devoted to orderly duty or a phore or heliograph. Inspection of quarters follows at 8:S0, with 40 min tites J of close order drill thereafter. At 9:45 school again, : with practical work: as members of a gun's crew (ma rines! man the secondary batteries aboard battleships), or perhaps a study of rank nit nttnir Inalmla of AfTlV'"a'fi(ll'nr' listed men of all branches of the serv-T Ice. It is more or less easy," let It be remarked, for the young recruit to learn the Insignia of his .own service,. but It keeps his brain buzzing to distinguish the different ratings of the navy. . School again at 10 :45. this - time per haps if or a lecture on ship's routine; life . afloat or In packing regulation lockers. Emergency drills such as in ease of fire. collision or "aoanaon snip" or in me vent of an engagement with the enemy also (enliven the recruit's time and es pecially his Imagination. ITOT AliL BBI IA5D IPrtl 1 "HbvIt tar I cf. ffeaa nnnn mao 1 ttnf ImV lei served just like on shipboard, and if the chow-house would only rock ablt once i in awhile, making the novice con duct; his fork into his .ear instead of ' bis mouth, he would have the full effect of being at sea. There is an hourfe rest after chow. But it is not all dry-land sailing for the embryo soldiers of the sea. Paris Island, , as its.. name indicates, is on or In the ocean and' the average recruit breathes, drinks and perspires salt water. So in the afternoon the J00 recruits put to sea In seven Cutters; quipped with oars and sails. The crews pull together under direction of an ex perienced coxswain . or, with sails set, tack: in the breeze; - Soon they are maneuvering under di rection of their "flagship," first In col umn, then In line, receiving Instruction In management and control of their own "shift." Sails later are fiirlA nnri tfca boat crews, with the rhythm of a perfect stroke, race for the dock where school Is held in the nomenclature of small boats, boat courtesy, handling an oar and ;tUler. ISLAND IS LIGHTED "The island is kept lighted at night by signals being flashed by the division ton wach at . the . three "ships." , The Messages are sent from masts atop the bunkhouses to men in the "fighting top" of a palm tree or on the "quarter deck" of the K. of C. building and relayed to all parts of tha island. , When the recruit gets to : talk like a seagoer, when, he calls out "batten that porthole". Instead of close the window, and speaks in no mild manner of the "bo'srn" and -the "C. P. OV when he knows the main mizzen from the bridge and the keelson from the fo'cas'le,"; he Is ready to receive his new blue uniform. There's the secret of his choosing the life afloat Instead of duty on land or ... w ujm, ,i luifl ui me neiiy. neat blue uniform that keeps that little land I school on , Paris islafid full at all times. ' - The "marine on ship duty wears the navy; blue jacket with bright brass but tons and on -dress inspections, white gloves and a, white belt with a shiny brass buckle, His trousers are of sky blue, his cap of dark blue with a bronze marine corps emblem and black lace shoes. After all these lessons, when he knows tha battleship from stem to stern, when he can salute like a veteran and carry out orders -like a Paul Revere, the ma rine lis no longer a recruit. He is a full fledged seagoer and he Is transferred to a real battleship for duty. Aiito Thieves Will , Be Off ered Banquet Vinlta. Okla-, July 12. (L N. S.)
