Roseburg Thar ia a 25 per eent increase in
acreage of small grains over normal and about
100 per cent increas in acreage of corn. Prune
erop was never more promising and indications
ar that tha yield win be normal. ' Apple erop
is in excellent Condition and indications are that
yield will be 115 per eent of normal. : Pears
avenging up well some orchards heavy, others
light. About 25 per eent new acreage coming.

that there will be 150 to 200 acres of broccoli
planted during July.
Continued showers and warm weather during
the past week have been vary beneficial to all
crops.

A closer Investigation of tha cabin

The hearing of Captain Nellson and
the members of the crew la being; held
today privately in tha office of the sher
iff. Frank O'Connor, general agent for
tha Pacific Steamship company, rnanag
ing operator, of the wooden steamer
Agarlsta, today received a letter from
Captain Jacob Nielsen, master of the
vessel, expressing tha view that his
first mate, Frank J. Sale, who died
from gunshot wounds inflicted while on
board the vessel, had committed sui
cide. -
Manager O'Connor atated that Cap.
tain Nielsen had not been placed un.
der arrest, and that should be b taken
into custody another captain would be
employed to take out tha ship. The
steamer is now coaling at Astoria and
will finish this evening. She Is loaded
with . ties and her destination is New
York.
. Captain Nielsen, who lives at 10$
College street, Portland, ia well known
in thia city and his many friends ex
press tha belief that he is absolutely
innocent of any connection with the
tragedy, i

J. S. Michael, steward on the Aga
rlsta, lives at 102 Cleveland avenue,
Portland. During the war he was
commissioned aa captain In the-quartermaster's
department and was pro
moted to major. HO waa on duty in
New Jersey.
1 New light on the suicide theory with
reference to the death of Mate Bale
was given today by Allen W. Hartman.
1106 East Twenty-aeventh street north,
w:io waa an oiler on board tha Asa
rista. He left the vessel Tuesday morn
ing at Aberdeen. He said :
- "Mate Sale appeared to bf -worried
about something;. Ha seemed to be
despondent and kept alone most of tha
time. While passing his cabin Tuesday
I notioed him sitting alone in hia room
And heard him say that "he did not
think he would return to California.
At times he appeared irritable.
"Captain Nielsen is highly liked by
all members of the ship's crews and he
never bad any trouble with any of
them." ..
