Paris. June 2. (By Mail.) (I. N.
S.) The Romanoffs, former reigning
family of Russia, are under the darkest
cloud in France. The republic haa de
creed that none of tlfe old-time grand
dukes of Russia, who used to lead the
pre-war gaitles of Montmarte, may re
turn to, France except to live in the
strictest seclusion. Those who want to
live in Paris or at DeauviHe or on the
Rlverla must first satisfy the French
authorities that they Intend to lead
quiet lives.
. Already one of their number, Grand
Duke Boris, son of Grand Duke Vladi
mir and nephew of the ex-czar, has
been expelled from French soil. Dis
regarding the French ban, he came to
Paris .with forged passes and was ac
companied by a woman. Had he been
content to hide himself incognito in
some quiet . corn r of the country the
complacent authorities probably would
have left ! him in peace. But Boris
could not forget that in 1913 he was
the lion of the JNjrand Saison" at
Deauville and that during the ensuing
winter he ' was prince of all the Mont
marte . fetes.
KICKS CP FUSS AT -PARTY

party at a financier's house near Paris
and Insulted his' host and hostess as
well as the other guests. The next
day he. was .given 48 hours to leave
France. He thereupon made for Spain
to enjoy the amenities of the San Se

cross the frontier King Alfonso sent
word that he was "undesirable" and
with his companion he was held up
at the frontier station of Hendaye.

next made his - way to. Monte Carlo
and here he received word from Rome
that he could find sanctuary across
the Italian border. The Grand Duke
Nicholas, former commander in chief
of the Russian army, and Grand Duke
Peter are also living in Italy.
Unless the Romanoffs return to favor
with the republican government, Amer
ican hostesses in Paris will deplore
, the loss of some of their liveliest
guests.

manoff and the mother of the former
crown princess of Germany. She had
been banned from the German court
by the ex -kaiser who thought her a
f llo-htv woman. The errand duchess
and the grand dukes quickly gained
the reputation of being the biggest
tango I'tfans" of Paris and -they were
in great demand among the American
society women here. Mostly they
-showed a, marked predeliction for the
festivities staged by Mrs. Leeds and
Mrs. Corey, especially for the tatter's
poetic dances at Chateau De Villege
