THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PO RTLAND, THURSDAY, "JUNE 5. 1919. JAPANESE TRAMP SHOWS SIGNS OF VERY BAD-USAGE Shinpo Mam, Built Last Year, Looks as if She Had Been in Service for Years. COMES TO LOAD , LUMBER ..- 1 Vessel Was Delayed Several Days on 1 San Francisco-Portland Trip Because! of Bad Weather. The Japanese " tramp Bteamer Shinpo Maru. which arrived in Portland early today. w built In Japan In 1918 to load lumber for China. In aplte or ner " brief existence, she already showa the 'appearance of hard usage at sea. The elements have left their Imprint on the exposed steel plates to such a degree that at first sight one would believe that the ship had been in service . several years. The Shinpo is ai vessel of 6800 dead weight tons and has a speed of 10 knots. It required three months in which to buld the shp, which is furnished with triple-expansion compound engines. Cap taein O. Konaka is master and T. Nlshi yama is chief officer. The ship 18 owned by the Kishlmoto Kisen company of -. Japan. i Arrival of the tramp in the local hax ' bor was delayed several days on account of a severe storm encountered Just after the vessel had left San Francisco for the Columbia river. Head northwest winds were met In an endeavor to buck these adverse conditions liberal use of the coal In the ship's bunker was used. So great was tile drala.on the supply of fuel that it was found necessary to return to San Francisco after a futile attempt to pro ceed against the storm. After taking on . -. . A - , 1 - , Hail Pltv thA . lav ions el. 1 - steamer proceeded on her way. - The vessel i under charter to Dant & Russel. lumber exporters of Portland, and when loaded at the Inman-Poulsen -mill arid the St. Johns Lumber company will have about 4.000,000 feet on board, consisting of timber of a general char acter. The Shinpo Mary is- the second tramp lumber carrier to make this port this year, and it has been more than two years since the Japanese tramps . made this port regularly for lumber cargoes. NEW SHIPS LUXURIOUS Glymont, Which Leaves Tonight, Fur nished With Many Conveniences. Injnarked contrast with the old time freighters is the degree of comfort fur nished officers and crew of the modern freighter of the Emergency fleet cor poration. The new 3800-ton steel steam er Olymont. Captfcin A. McKenzie, built by the Albina Engine & Machine works of Portland, which sails this evening for Seattle to join the fleet of the Matson Navigation company, is an example of the comfort that; is at hand for those who sail on TJnple. Sam's ships these days. The. captain's quarters reminds one of the appointments of a modern hotel. The master has a private bath, which Includes af shower, hot and cold water and even salt water is available. The cabin is supplied with a choice col lection of books. The quarters of the chief engineer and his assistants are also well furnished. The of ficers , dining saloon Is finished with hard wood and comfortable, sta tionary swivel chairs are provided. Electric lights i are furnished by the vessel's own: plant and the ventilating system In the ship is modern in every detail.- The cold storage room is spa cious and here are kept the fresh- meats and perishable edibles needed on the long ocean voyage. The ship's own ice making plant keeps- the temperature in the refrigerator room down to 34 degrees above xero. j An electric bell manipu lated from the inside can be ing In case anyone happens to get "accidentally locked in' the cold room, at the imminent peril of being froxen to death. The ship has a hospital room, wire less telegraphy and adequate fire fight ing apparatus. -Before the Glymont started on her voyageher engines were given a final dock trial by her own crew and all was found in perfect order. The triple ex pansion engines, made by the Albina Engine and Machine works, develop 1600 horse power. Oil is used as fuel, but grates for converting the ship to a . coal burner: are available on shipboard. .The Glymont will go on the run from Seattle, San Francisco to Honolulu. A part' cargo -of j Portland freight was taken on board for Honolulu. PLAN'S FOR FERRYBOAT Craft for Use at Independence to Cost : About S2G00. 1 . Plans have been drawn for the con struction of a ; new ferryboat to run across the Willamette river at Indepen dence, and bids' will be asked for early next week at Salem. The boat will cost, with engines and machinery, about (2600, and will be built to accommodate both passengers and i vehicles. The expense of constructing the ferry will be borne Jointly by Marion county and Polk county. The Portland Marine Ways & Boat company of Portland pre pared the plans, which call for "a craft 65 feet in length and the engines will have 15 horsepower, i The cable method will be used when the 'current of the river is swift. The boat will be built in Port land, it is expected. News of the Port . . Arrival June 8 Shinpo Mara.
