C -1 all, supervisor of the Santiam forest. Grades have been cut, the trail widened and three bridges built, making the way much easier, than formerly. Saddle and pack animals may be procured at De ' troit. . ANALYSIS OP WATEE8 At the hot-springs are 62 different springs, ranging from 115 to 198 degrees Fahrenheit, of which the vapor, mud and hot water baths are claimed- to be beneficial for rheumatism and other ali ments.: No two .of the springs are alike 'in mineral-qualities but a typical analy sis, shows the following Ingredients per gallop; Silica. 9.80 grains ; aluminia, .16 ; ferrous carbonate, .09 ; calcium, 14.23 ; sodium chloride, 133.32 ; sodium carbon ate, . 88.81 ; magnesium sulphate, 7.23 ; potassium chloride, .91. The springs are located; at' a beautiful spot on the Breltenbush river, among the fir and cedar, ideal for vacation pur poses. Tents and cabins, and board if desired. ' are furnished at a reasonable rate, according to Mr. Hall. Big game such afr bear and deer are found In the vicinity. Streams and lakes within a short distance furnish good sport to the fisherman. Communication with the out side world may be had at any time by telephone' over the government wires and a pack train carries mall from De troit to the' springs several .times weekly. , LAKE FISHERMAN'S PARADISE At the western base of Mount Jeffer son lies Farriella lake, a fisherman's paradise. . Here trout can be caughtlal most any ,tlme of day :or year. FSve miles away -the snowy peak of Mount Jefferson challenges the - mountain climber and a trip to its summit Is well worth the trouble. To the north of the mountain lies the Hanging valley, or Jefferson park, a comparatively level area of several hundred acres which is dotted with small - clear lakes and threaded by numerous clear streams and carpeted with wild flowers of every true. Jefferson park Is a mountain paradise with its flowers and lakes, streams and forests. It may be reached in one day from Detroit by the Mtnto and White water trails. , . A newer trail to be constructed within a short time will follow higher ground, crossing the baJte of Outerson peak and thence along the ridge past La Boca cave7 and Joining the 'main trail above Wild Cheat meadows, according to Supervisor 'Hall. " j HtGE CAVE IITTERESTTKfr La Boca cave Is a huge cavern hol lowed out of the layk rock by the ac tion of water oh the ridge above Wild Cheat meadows and Is about 150 feet long by 120 feet wide, the roof aver aging a height of 30 feet. On the Mlnto trail, 24 miles from De troit and three miles from the Cascade divide, lies Marion lake, 480 acres In ex tent and of unknown depth. Here many fine catches of cut-throat trclit are made each year. On 'the trail south be In w the divide are. a chain of lakes, in cluding Duffy and Santiam lakes, all stocked with fish. A favorite camping place, according to Supervisor Hall, is at Fish lake ion the- old" -Santiam wagon road, 10 miles w est of the Cascade "divide and 30 miles east of Cascadia postoffice, or 60 miles .from Lebanon the nearest railroad point. This Is also the upper headquar ters of the forest service during the summer. . MA3TT TRAILS AKD ROADS Telephone communication may be had with the outside world at all times and trails, and roads lead in four directions from the lake. The forest service Is now resurfacing-4he old Santiam road so that automobiles may reach the lake and vi cinity without much trouble. I Clear lake, another attractive spot, lies two miles south of Fish lake and is probably the most beautiful of the en tire series of lakes. The Water1s of ex cessive clearness, according to Super visor Hall, and small objects can be dis tinctly seen 30 or 40 feet below the sur face, while . huge trout are easily dis cernible swimming .along the bottom. The water Is a bluish green tint, turn ing to opaline, and Is extremely cold the average ' temperature on the surface on a warm summer day being 42 de grees Fahrenheit. The lake was formed by a lava flowv which blocked up the Mc Kenxle river of so recent date that huge : fir trees minus the limbs are still stand ing upright in the water even to the sur face, and at times during, low water a source of danger to boatmen. The largest trout of any lake In the vicinity - ti Girls! Your hair needs a littte "Danderinc'V-that's all! At times they are exceedingly coy and at other times bite recklessly. Fishing Is also good farther down the McKensie river, which is reached by a foot trail. UFPEB SODA FAVOBITE BESOBT Upper Soda, 10 miles east of Cascadia, is also a favorite resort, the chief at traction being a natural soda spring. Which flows from the banks of the Santiam. It Is ideal for camping aind is easily reached by automobile during the summer. Big lake, near the Cascade divide, along the Santiam wagon road, is another popular camp ing place. i A favorite week-end resort Is at Cas cadia postoffice, 80 miles from Leba non, where camping facilities, good meals and lodging may be secured at reasonable prices. The total mileage of trail which the foresti service has built upon the San tiam forest amounts to 275 miles, while 250 miles of telephone line has been furnished for the purpose of protecting the valuable- timber and making the country accessible said Supervisor Hall. These trails and telephone lines are re paired each spring by the forest ser vice and offered to the public for use without charge,. RECALLS EVENTS OF EARLY HISTORY Mrs. Adrian . Lachapelle, Wow ' Nearly Centenarian, One of First White Immigrants. By Caroline Waiioi Tbomason After sitting for a time in the presence of Mrs. Adrian Lachapelle, the oldest woman In Oregon, and after hearing her recount in faraway voice the events of almost a century ago, one feels i as if in a mystic dream, as if transported from the busy, bustling., present day world back to the romantic old Oregon days. When the great forests of the Oregon country were still known only to the red man and to the French-Canadian coureurs du bois, Adrian was a beauti ful young Indian maiden, the daughter of a Chinook princess and of a French- Canadian trapper, Ettenne Lucier. She wnnessea tne coming or Dr. joni Mc Loughlin to Fort Vancouver In 1824, and she saw him assume control over the great fur bearing kingdom, a kingdom that Included the entire trans-Rocky mountain territory She graphically de scribes the annual return of the trappers laden with their furs; As she speaks one can fancy that he is standing with her on the banks of the Columbia at Vancouver, eager to welcome the cou- j . 1 1 1 ... 1 1 ii in ii i i.i ii.i ii;.iri.ri 1 1 1 1 1. j mmmmmmmfmmmmmmmmmmtmmmtmmmmmm'J I rw ,Kt'". 'if FIRST IMMIGRANTS RECALLED . She remembers well when the first American immigrants came with their families to settle in the Willamette val ley, "lis me donnaient -du cafe, et Je l'aimaia" ("They gave me coffee, and I liked it"), she said. , After a time her father gave us his trapping and took a claim in what is now East Portland. She recalls that there was only one other log cabin in the locality at the time. The family traded in Vancouver, crossing the Columbia tn little canoes. This place not being quite to the Ifk ir.g of Ettenne Luclei he i took a dona, tion land claim 35 miles farther up the Willamette river at Champoeg. Adrian was about 14 years old at this time. The family returned often to Vancouver to trade, and to visit their friend. Dr. Mc Loughlln. She says that when she was a little girl she used to sit on the good old doctor's lap, and sing "Protestant hymns' for him, for she was a forest song bird when she was a little girl. CHAMPOEO MEETING Mrs. Lachapelle Is' very proud of her father's stand at Champoeg on the mem orable second day of May, 1S43. The settlers had come together from all over the valley to decide the momentoua question as to whether they should or ganize a provisional, government. One hundred and two sturdy pioneers were present at that meeting. The question was argued fiercely on both sides. Some contended, that a regular government would necessitate taxes, and would mean governmental interference in their crude manner ' of living. Finally the matter was put to a vote, all wanting a govern ment withdrawing to one side of the ground. For a time the vote stood 60 to 52, and the'' provisional government seemed lost Then Etienne Lucier and Francois X. Matthieu, although they were French-Canadians, and although those desiring a government were most ly Americans, walked over to the pro visional government party:! amidst the cheer of the victor. " !. WAS COMMU5ITT PHTSICIAS Adrien Lucier and Andre Lachapelle. a trapper from Montreal." were married in 1841: at St- Paul, the Catholic -mission that had been estabished in the - heart of the Willamette valley. Her skill In preparing and administering these remedies gave iier renown far and wide, and her professional services rwere in demand for miles and: mile around. She never, refused to go, day or night, rain or shine. For this purpose she always kept a swift, well trained horse, and she was known as an export horsewoman, as well as swimmer. For the past 30 years she has lived with one- of her sons.
