Advance of 2c a pound in the price of cream , ry butter which took effect here during the day as reported in the morning edition of The Jour nal, waa made in view of the recent advances In California. For awhile the trade here expressed the opinion tliat no sdrance would be made at thia time because it i fU that the California rie was more of a speculative nature than an actual BMTket condition, bat later with an advance on Paget Sound, the rise iu forced here. The adrance In butter placed creamery extras at 60 a pound for prints in parchment wrap per and 61o for carton. " Adrance of only lc a pound was made in ' the price of bntterfat at the nine time indicat ing that the trade in general was not sure of ita ground in making the rise in butter. - Cube market h firm but 58c appear to be the extreme price for the day for extraa and only a very are 11 per cent of the business is thi high. Cohen The so-called "take all" wheat disease which has been noted in various sections ef the grain belt east of the Rocky mountains, la causing much apprehension among growing and milling interests of the entire country. The Corrallis correspondent of The Journal edriaee that a conference regarding the disease will be beld in Spokane. May 22 to determine whether the disease is prevalent anywhere In the Pacific coast section and to prevent its intro duction if it is not. The college department of plant pathology will be represented by C. E. Ownee. assistant in botany and plant pathology, and G. R. Hoerner of the federal bureau of cereal diseaae investigation. ' H. E. Johnson, also of the federal bureau, will visit the college Tues day and accompany the delegates to the con ference. He is just from Illinois, where "take all' is a serious problem, and is familiar with the disease and its symptoms. Steps will be taken to prevent the introduc tion through wheat importations from Australia, wliere it is particularly destructive. Following the conference the college wiD in? titute a thor ough search of Oregon wheat fields to ascertain whether "take-all" is present. Wheat troubles somewhat similar were described in Oregon 10 years ago by Dr. A. B. Cordley. If it was "take-all" it baa not the virulent form here that it has in the east and in Europe, says Professor II. P. Bars, who will direct the Oregon in vestigations. COLOMBIA SALMON PRICES The price of spring pack Columbia river Chi nook salmon is officially opened at the same fig ures as a year ago. The various packa show per dozen : 1 pound tails 1 'pound flats .................. H pound flats ................. 1 pound ovaU H pound ovala 1$3.15 . 3.25 . 2.00 . 3.95 . 2.50 As has been forecast by The Journal for some time past, the opening prices on the 1919 spring pack Columbia river canned aalmon has been opened and placed at exactly the aame figures as during the 1918 season witlf pound talis at $3.15 and flats at $3.25 per dozen. With a pack that has been extremely disap pointing to date this season. With no carry over in any hands as regards the better quality fLb. With demand from all over the world enormous, the prospects are that even at this time the season's pack for the spnng-aummer months of the Columbia river has been oversold. Leading packers of the river have already re ceived more orders for canned chinook . salmon from the east than they expect to pack this season. This lias created a very firm tone all through the trade and even the cheaper quality fish ia inclined to hold very firm values. REALIZING SALES CARRY EARLY COTTON PRICES OFF New York. May 21. (I. N. S.) The failure of cables to respond fully to yesterday's advance here, led to considerable realizing: at the opening of the cotton market today, and in consequence first prices were 145 to 40 points lower. Spot bouses, the south and Liverpool also sold, the Utter chiefly in late positions. Wall street traded both ways, and Japanese interests were buyers of cotton. Increased commission house support developed soon after the opening, and prices advanced sharply, the list at the end of the first 15 minutes showing a firm undertone al only a decline of about 6 points. The close waa steady at a net decline of 23 & 55 points, the market reacting in the CANNED SALMON last few minutes, under New Orleans and local liquidation. Furnished by Overbeck Y Cooke Co.. There is not quite so much keenness among dealers to hold for such stiff prices as previously al Ui U shading is by no means general. Edward U Wells of the Portland 'office of the weather bureau advises: The week was cool, with considerable cloudi ness. Light Tains w?re of frequent occurrence in the western counties, and scattered suowers occurred in most of the eastern part of the state, but thtre was a considerable area in the central and southeastern counties where no rain fell. A little snow fell in a few elevated locali ties. Frost occurred several mornings In some of the eastern counties. In the central and Southern counties there were high drying winds, and some dust storms. Snow in the mountains melted rather slowly, but streams carried a good flow of water. Except over limited areas in the western and southern counties farm work is well in hand, and vegetation is fairly well ad vanced for the season. The cool weather and light rains were favor able for winter wheat, oats and rye. Where no rain fell these crops are suffering from drouth, but the screage thus affected is relatively sma'.l. Some little damage was done by frost and cold winds. Spring wheat, oats and barley are germi nating well in most localities, and have been helped by rain, but need more rain. Seeding is still in progress in some elevated localities. A few aphides are reported from Polk county, and grasshoppers are doing some damage in Klamath county. Planting of corn is progressing rapidly, though over very small areas planting was atopped by rain. Warmer weather ia needed for com. The weather was generally favorable for fruit but there is still complaint of apples, cherries and prunes dropping. Strawberries are plentiful to Douglas county and are ripening in other sec tions. Early cherries are turning in Northern I'matilla county. The growth of alfalfa and clover has been re tarded by low temperature and lack of sunshine. Other hay crons have generally made good growth. Meadows and pastures hare been re vived by rain in the western counties,' and to a limited extent elsewhere. More rain is needed. SUck continues to make good gains. Shearing continues. Soma sheep have been poisoned on the range in Lake county. Planting of potatoes continues.' Early pota toes are growing well. Gardens need warmer weather and more snnshine.
