"The eagerness displayed by manufacturers to secure wools at this season of the year is an aenal, and their anxiety, to buy has resulted ia receiving good prices at the government auc tion sales now being bald in Boston. The weals being; put up for sale in the east are taken as fast as offered. The price compare very fa vorably with the best prices paid last year, espe cially for fine, fine medium and half blood wools of good staple. "We are just ia receipt of a' wire from ear Boston office, giving"' a summary of the situation there, and which we quote as follows: " 'Average ' to choice territory wools In de mand with topmakers, manufacturers and wool dealers competing keenly for such spot wools. Prices paid for choice wools at present govern ment sales 'practically on same basis of value as last Boston auction. Government now offering at auction many inferior and defective clips which must of neeessitr be sold at lower value per scoured pound. Desirable wools in demand, in dicating steady improvement in wool 'manufac turing circle.' "In a word, it appears that the best property this year ii the finer wools, and growers there fore need not expect the usual spread between fine and coarse wools in favor of coarse; indeed, the situation may be just reversed. We are watching the wool market closely and we find that the demand for fine and fine medium wools, and, also lislf blood, is very keen, and in fact the trade is now taming attention a. little to the coarse wools. . -"However, the interest in these wools is not very strong, and the prices being bid on quarter blood and three-eighths are only slightly above the government upset values, but the fsct thst more attention is being paid to the coarser gradea tends to show more dearly the strength of the fin grades and give the grower of coarse wool much 'encouragement. "From the Boston wire quoted above yon will note that the government ia now offering many inferior and defective wools. Naturally theae wools would have to- be sold at lower val ues per scoured pound in keeping with the grade, shrinkage and condition of the wool. "Many of the mills making yarns have their output sold well in advance snd one of the questions confronting them is that of making delivery of their yarn satisfactory to buyers. Therefore, they are in a position to demand very good prices for their fine stocks providing they can assure their customer of reasonable delivery. "Dealer now have their representatives in the field and we hear of aame new clips of wool changing hands at prices all the way from 84c to 48a and 60c, according to the kind of wool and the district in which it was grown." Cehert f Kelectioif ef seed; the planting only of the best auality stock is absolutely necessary for the pioducer of -potatoes to aecnr the best returns for his work and investment on the farm. Given first-class seed, it has been demon am. ted cn numerous occasions that Oregon pro duces the best potatoes in the country and for which a premium over the regular market is alwas available. This is shown not only, when the demand is keen for potatoes, but wheif there is a lull in the general market. In fact, when the trade is dullest and the demand at lowest ebb it is always the best Quality stock that finds a purchaser. With the planting season now on in West ern Oregon, it is time for the potato grower to sev that he secures and plants first-class seed. A few years ago Oregon potatoes were eagerly sought by California and other aectiona for planting. Just because they were better than tock obtainable in other section. Then the quality decreased to such an extent that the Oregon production no longer held first place. ' First in importance in growing potatoes is to plant the best seed. Then grading na sn es sential (actor, a close second in importance to the planting. Those desiring special information regarding any market should write the Market Editor, in closing stamp for reply.
