s I'.lST i,iOi!llll IS ALMOST EilTBlELY fOilTLAHD PRODUCT New Steel; Steamer Built, Equipped and Outfitted by Portland Firms. PROGRAM OBJECT LESSON Ad Club Celebration' Emphasizes Importance of Business Which New Shipping Activity Brings. A Portland built ship, equipped and outfitted in Portland. This thought deeply 'impressed tho hundreds of visitors on board the new -4-, steel steamer Wet Munham Wednes- - Jam. when the Portland Ad club stared one of the most unique program In the history of Portland. , It was an object lesson of the im - portanca of the shipbuilding industry and concrete evidence of the fact that Portland firms are playing a large part Ip the work, of furnishing; the thousands vf dollars worth of goods and equipment necessary to outfit a vessel, and goods consigned to the Far East When the West Munham sails out of the Portland harbor on her maiden voy age for the Orient thta month she will carry the name of Portland in score of different ways. Aside from the 1m portance of the local construction of the hull and boilers 'and all deck machinery, Is the fact that supplies and equipment were bought in this city. Local mer chants have derived a lucrative trade from1, the new Industry, and the inaugur ation iof the regular freight service, which is destined to reach one salting each month, assures a continuation of patronage of local houses dealing in f pod, coal and other supplies. It Is estimated that the cost of the provisions alone, - which have been placed on board the vessel, or which have been ordered, will run to $25,000. Many Firms Have Fart Following is list of the local houses which have shared in the orders placed by the purchasing department of the Emergency Fleet corporation:' Forb.es ""Supply company, Norris Safe Lock company, Marshall Wells .Hardware company, -Peerless Pacific company, Hcmeyman Hardware company, Good year Rubber- company. Pacific States Rubber company, Oscar Schwar. dealer in watches and chronometers; Portland Marine Supply company, Beebe com pany, Htrsch-Weis Manufacturing f om pany. Pacific Tent & Awning company, Portland Cordage company, Powers A Estes, which firm furnished -the ship's medical supplies ; M. Seller Co., Olds, Wprtman & King. Portland Furniture company. Inland Woolen mills. . 1 The purpose of the Ad club's celebra tion was to focus attention on the im portance of the new marine service especial attention being paid to the value of the export and import features of the business. One underlying thought which was rained at the meeting was thattthe Palermo-,. Steamship company, c in inaugu . 'rating the new service, in making Port 's i-.whjc h.ivi haoa tnt ifi'ltna nf itAnm. ers tiestlned for this run. Other vessels operated by the company will make Se attle, but Portland is established as the terminal for the West Munham, the West Cellna, which will sail In May, and two other vessels to be assigned by the shipping board at a later date, i-y lTeed Shipping Agencies Need for agencies to handle the ship ping business was emphasiied by A. F. Zipf, pr&tt ic manager of the Pacific Steamship company. Necessity of lowering the cost of man ufactured goods was urged by E U Thompson, head of the Portland Woolen mills. , ' The statement was made by H. Kern penich of the firm of Allen Lewis that transpacific freight rates were as low as those applying from Portland to the Idaho line. . Importance of the cargo shipments on the West Munham is seen by the fact that 20 per cent of the freight, is of local origin. - ' WOOD SHIP PROSPECT BRIGHTENS Insurance Only Barrier In Way of Immediate Utilization. Prospects . for utilization of govern ment wooden steamers as flour carriers, a move which is destined to put the idle boats in the harbor into service and at the same time help Relieve the traffic congestion of the government food ad ministration, loomed again today. Preparations Cannot- Possibly Give, the Same Strength, Power and Endurance As Organic Iron Nuxate4 Iron The remarkable results pro- ' duced by Nuxated Iron -and its' widespread sale (it being esti mated tnat over tnree million people annually are today using it) has led to the offering of nu merous substitutes, and these . physicians mentioned below say that health officials and doctors everywhere should caution the public against accepting substitutes for Nuxated Iron, as these substitutes instead of being organic iron may be nothing more than a metallic iron com pound which may m some cases. produce more harm than good. Those .who feel the need of a strength and blood builder should ge to their family floe tors, and obtain a prescription calling for organlo iron Nuxated ; .- - Iror and present this to their druggist so that there may-be no question about obtaining the proper article. ' department of the chipping board, an nounced that the project of using the wooden ships has again reached an ad vanced stage and that, providing the matter of Insurance .could be adjusted, he expected to see some of the ships put into service out of the 'Columbia river at an early date. The question of insurance appears to be the stumbling block. The Insurance concerns, it is said, are unwilling to as sume all the risk on flour shipments in.L uia woousn carriers. An eiioix is peing mads by the companies to have the gov ernment assume part of the risk. Conferences are now being held be tween the insurance concerns and food administration. - Max H. Houser, grain administrator of the:; food administra tion, is keeping in close touch with the wood ship situation as a number of wood vessels can ' be 1 loaded "- with flour - in Portland just as soon as the boats are available.
