TOTAL NEARLY $40,000,000 Churches of Denomination in En tire Country Expect to Raise Tremendous Sum in Few Hours Bjr James F. Ewing Tomorrow afternoon from 2 until 5 o'clock every Presbyterian In the city, who can be found at home, will be asked to subscribe to the great victory new era fund which the Presbyterian church in the United States is planning- to raise. This Is a sum of some thirteen millions for benevolence in the whole United States. The share of this, which has been assigned to Portland, is $72,500. This sum represents an advance- all along the line of the activity of 'the church. Four millions of the money goes for enlarged work In the foreign mission field, $3,000,000 for special work in America, in the cities, among the immi grants, in the lumber camps, and in the frontier towns, where no churches have been- built. A large section of the money is to be used -for educational work both at home and abroad and another large section for the improvement of the Sunday school . work of the church. Besides the $1J,000,000 for benevolence, it Is planned to r$.ise about $26,000,000 for current expenses. These workers will go forth In pairs to every part of the congregation and get pledges to provide for the whole budget ef -the church for the year beginning i April 1. The total budget of the First church is $68.000 : much larger .than ever" before, and it is clear that better system and organization must be applied if suc cess Is to crown the efforts. The church .. has adopted the methods used in all the war drives and is confident of going over the top as did the city in those drives. Tomorrow mornincr Dr. John H. Boyd will preach on the 'New Era Movement" : and will prepare the people directly for the afternoon drive. Approaching Climax Hope Presbyterian church Is approach ing the clima of the new era campaign with Increasing enthusiasm, according to the pastor. Rev. Floyd E. Dorrls. The annual convention of the Mult nomah County Sunday School associa tion will be held this coming week from Tuesday to Friday. Several prominent Sunday school workers m the west have been secured to take part in the pro gram. Among them are Walter C. Moore, general secretary of the West ern Washington Sunday School asso ciation ; Mrs. E. C. Knapp of Spokane, wife of the general secretary of the Inland Empire Sunday School associa toin ; Dr. John H. Matthews of Seattle, religious education director In the west for the Congregational church ; and James F. Ewing. director of religious education at First Presbyterian church. Charles A. Staver, Multnomah county president. and Harold F. Humbert, sec retary of the Oregon association, will have charge of the program. The con vention this year will be a new inno vation for local Sunday school workers, as it will be a school of Sunday school methods, and not the old fashioned sort of meeting where only reports of past achievements are read. This school was planned for last January, but owing to the influenza epidemic, the convention was postponed. The sessions will be held at the First Congregational church. The diternoon sessions are from 3 to 4 :30 o'clock, and the evening sessions from 7,:30 to 9 :15 o'clock. A new special feature has been intro duced' this year and that is a confer ence class for pastors. This class will meet at 4 o'clock on Thursday and Friday afternoons only. A Sunday school exhibit will also be conducted each afternoon. This school will be free to the public. Sunday school work ers are inviterd to attend and take advantage of the classes. African Life Is Chalk Talk Topic The second in a series of chalk talks will be given Sunday night at Pilgrim Congregational church by the " pastor, the Rev. R. M. Pratt. He will describe the social side of African life. The first lecture last Sunday night at tracted a large audience. The male quartet will render music, including a number entitled, "In Liberty's Name." Mrs. Jessie O. Steckle has chfge of the music. Dr. Waldo's Themes Sunday morning Dr. William A. Waldo will take up the different ele ments of Christianity as presented by human personality in his sermon at .the White Temple. A two weeks' parochial mission will commence at St. Mary's cathedral on Sunday. The first week will be for the women and the,, second week for men. Although the first week is primarUy for women, men will be welcome at the ser vices and the same will be true regard ing the women during the men's week. The mission will be conducted by Rev. Father Anthony, O. F. M. Beginning on Sunday -evening the special mission ser vices will be held each day. The week day masses will be at. 6, 7 and 8 a. m., and the evening services will take place at 8 p. m. The evening services will be preceded by organ music commencing at 7 :45 p. m. Noonday Meetings St. Andrews' Plan The Brotherhood of St. Andrew of the Episcopal church is planning for the annual noonday meetings held under its auspices at a downtown theatre dur ing Passion week and Holy week. Two speakers have been secured for Passion week with' special reference to their army experience the Very Rev. Wil liam C. Hicks, dean of Ail Saints' cathedral, Spokane, and George Harvey of American Lake. Dean Hicks spent a year at the front as a Y. M. C. A. secretary, and Mr. Harvey held the same position at Camp Lewis. The Portland clericus will hold a special meeting at the Percival Memorial library Monday morning. A paper will be read by the Rev. T. F. Bowen. and the clergy will be entertained at lunch eon at Bishopcroft. Evangelist Reld to Speak The evangelistic services in Sellwood Baptist church will be conducted by Dr. S. J. Reid, state evangelist, beginning on Sunday morning. Services at 11 a. m. and 7 :30 p. m and every evening ex cept Saturday. The song service will commence at 7 :30. Revival to Close The special series of revival meetings being conducted, in: the West Piedmont Friends church by Evangelist Harry Hays and Rev. Leurana Terrel, will close Sunday. Hamilton To Talk at Sunnyside Jack Hamilton, late major of in fantry, will address the audience at the Sunnyside Congregational church Sun day evening at 7 :45 o'clock. Major Hamilton's experiences as a soldier are so extensive that his recital cannot fail to be of intensive interest to all. As a captain In the English army for 14 years he served during the mutinies in India, during the Boer war in South Africa and other great campaigns. At the outbreak of the present war he en listed with the French army and served in the ambulance department ; later he joined the American army. His story covers 20 months of continuous service.
