Newspaper Page TextE MUST Desks Packed With Bills From Senate and Wednesday Will . Be Probable Adjournment Day. SENATE MARKS TIME WAITING Most Important Legislation of . Year Hangs Over Because Jam Demands Several More Days. 'Salem, . Feb. 21. Their desks jammed with unfinished senate business and with a long list of big bills awaiting ac tion, among which are all the big ap propriations bills of the session, house leaders today are preparing to face the inevitable and adjourn on Saturday night until Monday. At the present rate of progress in the house it will be impossible to clear the decks and effect final adjournment be fore the small hours- of Wednesday morning. Up to this time but relatively few senate bills have gone through the house and the pigeon holes of the chief clerk's desk are full of senate bills while the various house committees have not emptied their pockets of senate meas ures by any means. At the same time some of the biggest and most important house bills of the 1 session arc far down the calendar and some have not yet been introduced for first reading, among these being the automobile license tax bill and the com promise road bill which has been framed to take the place of Senator Dimick's bills 67 and 68. House leaders are unanimous in ad mitting that It will be impossible to reach final adjournment this week, even by grinding continuously throughout to night and Saturday without wading into a wholesale slaughter of both senate end house legislation. TJiey do not relish starting on such a course and it is more than probable that there will be no -adjournment. Over on he senate side the decks are elder and the senate is marking time, working part of the day, and not at all at night, waiting to take care of what the house sends it. It Is ready and willing to pass its usual concurrent resolution fixing" the time of adjournment at Saturday night, which would, of course be unavailing. Unless the house would concur. By adopting an ad verse report frorri the ways and means committee, the senate today indefinitely postponed senate bill 263, which appro priated $10,000 for paying Oregon's share of the cot of making an investi gation of the Columbia river at Cascade Liocks with the idea of recommending improvement? in the river which would facilitate river traffic. Police Dance Will Be Held Saturday At The Auditorium The annual police dance will be held Saturday night, Washington's birthday, at The Auditorium. This is the great annual event of the police bureau. Cap tain Harry Circle said this morning that the general public and business houses had purchased about 3500 tickets. The proceeds from the dance will be turned over to the Police Beneficiary associa tion, and will be used to aid policemen and their families, when the man is in capacitated for service through injury or sickness. During the Spanish influenza epidemic this, fund is said to have kept the wolf from the door of several homes of police officers. Father O'Hara Is Speaker at Realty Club Lunch Friday Father O'Hara addressed the Portland Realty board at the regular Friday noon luncheon in the crystal room of the Ben Bon hotel on "Experiences in France." If it were able through its concessions to draw America away from Its traditional foreign policy. "Japan semi-officially announces that the constitution abolishes the Monroe doctrine. "This is the first step in Internationalism this is the first admis sion that we have to depend upon the international state to preserve our In tegrity. "From the beginning of the preamble to the end of the constitution of the league there is recognition of the idea tlat' the United States must substitute internationalism for nationalism. He admitted that a nation-wide vote on the League of Nations would, be difficult to secure. "But it should be done," he con tinued, "because the Issues Involved affect these people for all time to come." "The American people have the un doubted right to change their form of government whenever they see fit," Borah asserted. "I concede their right to make such changes in as orderly a fashion as may be approved by their judgment." Borah said he would have respected th3 president's request that there be no debate until he had consulted with the foreign relations committees were it not for "misleading statements" made by former President Taft.
