THE OREGON " DAILY JOURNAL. PORT LAND, THURSDAY. FEBRUARY JO, 1919. lO OLD FASHIONED BEAN SOUP SEEMS TO POTATO MARKET HAS A STAGNANT FEELING ; ALL ALONG THE COAST jafyactically No Demand Is Showing From Shipping Interests and tha Situation Is Considered Worst . Known for Many. Seasons. Market far potmtoe In utterly stagnant in the local territory t thU time nd there appears a wry weak tone in practically every primary mar ket of tha country. While aa high aa $1.00 per cental is "till be , lti( nominally offered for No. 1 potatoes at eoon try point, th.re is no special desire inon the iltrade to stock up. With March hot a few days away tha season fa faat coming to its closing period and atocka of potato unsold in tha Pacific Northwest are nn : oataaUy limited. Wholesale holding in the terri tory immediately tributary to Portland are not heavy, ttill the almost general absence of de 'wiand is creatine apprelienaiom among shippers. This Tiew does not apuesr to be shared at the . Bsoment by loeal grower-holder but the fact re ' mains that with Idaho and Eastern Washington I anxiously looking to this market for an outlet, the situation ia not good. - Yakima stock ia not giring satisfaction in tbia tserkat and the same condition is reported from other markets. For that reason the ateck from ! that section is being offered at various low prices i which the holders of this section refuse to en. tarUin. CHICKEIT MARKET . IS FAVORABLE ' Demand for chickens along the street ia quite i favorable with receipts fair. Sales, ef bene are being made around 30 32c a pound generally. Ducks are not coming but there ia a good call. CHEESE MOVEMENT IS IMPROVED Since the reduction of 10c a pound in the price of Tillamook cheese the local market has 'shown an iiniroved demand. The markets else 'where hare recently shown a better feeling and the trade here is nowiu line. OtD HOI'S FINDING GOOD CALL While there H a demand for anything in the bop market at this time, old holdings are showing I an unusually good tone with little being offered. By Hyrnaa H. Cone Nearly a dozen people are being em ployed by the government Jn the bureau ef markets in Portland to furnish in formation to the newspaper and trade that to already being supplied by news papers, which only employ a single man each for this purpose. That the bureau of markets has been watlng huge sums of the people's money has been reported for some time in the trade. Complaints are coming from various parts of the country that not only are many of the reports un available for general use .because they are not given out promptly, but that .many more employes are utilised in giv ing out this information than is neces sary. The government has Just established a branch of the dairy products bureau in Portland for the purpose of giving out information to the trade regarding the price of butter," eggs and cheese. This same Information has been avail able in the newspapers for many years and the government work to merely a duplicate of what the various publica tions are doing. Complaint has been frequently made that many of the reports are gathered by men absolutely unacquainted with the markets or market problems ana for that reason are given little attention by the trade generally.
