While no amount is said to hare been spec ified in the call for bids, still the trade feels that the purchase will be approximately the same as last time', which wa rather small. No change in' local flour price is reported. Trade here is quiet. Owing to the lack of steam ship facilities between Portland and Southern Cal ifornia, tha local trade is unable to accept orders from the south, and a liberal trade is said to be passing for that account with northern millers. Trend of the millfeed market is very weak, with ton lots being offered as low as 841 a ton, while some business between wholesalers is said to hare passed at 838.00 39.00 a ton. Lack of demand for coarse grains continues, bids in oats and barley therefore remain nominal. GERMANY REPORTED AS BIDDER AND A OF As High as 40e A Pound Has Been Paid Here Recently and Nothing Is Now Available Growers Said to Hold Contracts at 50c. Germany is tha big' (actor in the hop market at this time, and owing to tha starred condition of tha trade in the new republic, unheard of of fers for supplies are being made to secure what little stock remain unsold in growers' hands. Only a few small lots ara reported in the hands of growers of Oregon at this time. andoffera of 88 to 40c a pound have been frequently made during the Jaat lew days, with nothing offered. About a week ago several lots sold at 40c a pound. Not only is the demand for spot hops ex ceedingly firm, with nothing available, but It is stated by dealers that only three iota remain in the big Independence district available for con tracting and delivery during the 191 9 season. Ef forts to contract these supplies have been made by parties said to be acting for European interests during the last few days, but grower are unwill ing to contract below 60e a pound. , That Germany was not going without its beer, even though it lost the war. is indicated by the fact that secret purchases hare been made during the last few years, and the supplies have been held in the warehouses of this country. At this tima picking of hops is shown in tha Independ ence district for what i said to be for South American shipment, but, which in reality the trade believes to be for the account of German brewers. Present indications, according to some of the trade, is that the entire United Statea is not likely to produce more than 125,000 bales during the coming season, an amount materially less than Oregon alone produced daring the height of the industry. Portland had a toad of hogs in from Sunny sitle. Wash., during the day and the shippers were far more pleased with the results than if they had sold them upon a northern market. Shippers say that the "cutting cut process in the Portland market is hot nearly aa severe as in many stockyard centers and for that rea son the average returns to the country are better.
