Cobea Columbia river amaU are aolvino; the hUfh cost of food for many at this time, although they ara riven first aid by the declining prices on eggg od butter aa well as potatoes. While there was a slight Blackening; up of the run of smelt in the Columbia last night, for two years the run around Eagle Cliff has been very favorable and gillnetters have harvested while the harvest was good. TTiis naturally forced lower prices to rule in 'the Portland wholesale trade, with sales at 6 and 7c a pound for fresh fish. Frosen stock cannot be sold at arty price just now and huge quantities of this are said to te held by the Munici pal market, fof which the city will suf fer heavy loss. Tho lordly Chinook has followed the smelt into the Columbia and. while re ceipts are slowly increasing, the demand for this fish is so keen from a starved trade -that wholesalers are making sales at 80c a pound in the round, which means practically 85c a pound dressed, the usual method ef selling at whole sale. On account of the eold weather, all halibut boats are tied up and the only stock of this fish available is from the ice houses. per crate: celery, 81.25 doxen; artichokes, 81.76 per dozen; cucumbers, 82.25 per dozen; toma toes.
