ARRIVES IN BERLIN TO FIND 1 CITY ARMED CAMP Hotel Doors Are Barricaded and Soldiers Sleep by Side of Their 'Weapons. MACHINE GUNS BRISTLE Government Troops and Sparta can Followers Are Active j Soapbox Speakers Are Busy. Bt Gordon Ntilei Special Cable to The Journal and The Chicago ueuy in ewe (Copyright. J81. bj Chx-o Daily New Co.) Berlin, Jan. 9. (Delayed.) Twenty minute before midnight tonight I ar rived In the heart of the armed camp which Is now Berlin. Perhaps an ac count of . my experience In entering the elty will give an idea of conditions fta they are In the German capital. At o'clock this morning I left Oldensaal. the Dutch frontier town,! with the pros pect If there were no delays, of reach ing Berlin at 8 o'clock in the evening. Such news as trickled through from here was far from reassuring with the result that there were few travelers aaa consequently the trip was extreme ly comfortable. There was some anxiety among the passengers as to tho connection with the , main line at Lohne, as rumors were afloat of the activity of the Spartacus crowd in Dusseldorf. the starting point of the Berlin through train. It was but a few minutes late, however, and by 1 o'clock the last lap of the Journey was begun at Hanover. Alarming Beports Come Alarming reports reached us there about the fighting in Berlin and no papers from that city had come through. At this point the travelers thinned out until orfly about 60 civilians remained. These Included three women. The rest of tho passengers were officers and sol diers. There was a feeling of extreme tenseness at every one of the frequent stops at signal stations and there was a great clatter of opening windows the moment the wheels ceased to revolve. In spite of the Interruption all went well and it looked as though we would get through without trouble, especially when the wide circle of lights marking the outskirts of the capital came into view. They were certainly a welcome sight and I congratulated myself on my arrival in such a short time. But a shock came at Charlottenburg station. When the train drew in all the passengers were peremptorily ordered out. Questioning drew forth only vague replies to the effect that the Sparatcus forces were attacking the line just be-' yona . ana that it was Lmnossibl to 1 reacn the center of the city. Speakers Ilafrangne Crowds Thus I was left standing at 10 p. m. In a strange section where there were no hotel accommodations and apparently no means ot transportation. There were strange sights in the "plats" in front of we station. Dozens of groups of people Of all classes were swarming about ex cited speakers mounted on boxes under the brilliancy of the electric liahta. Detachments of government soldiers were appearing suddenly from the side streets and buildings and- hurrying in this and that direction. One party of a aosen soiaiers came up escorting young woman who struggled and cursed as sne was hurried into a military headquarters that once had been dainty moaiw panors. sne was a Hparatcus adherent and was hissed by the crowds as sne disappeared with her cantors. I determined to try to. reach Unter den Linden but was told that it was Impossible. Some assured me that tha center or the town was in rutna thought, however, that things could not be much worse and so I set out walking nuns io streets wnien were all. brll ,uaatiy lighted, and after an . hour reacnea tne sooioglcal gardens where I ' found that the subway, trains were still running. I decide to try to reach the Kaiser hof hotel, as the subway station Is di rectly across the street. But on my arrival mere i round that the station was ciosea. Tne train not stopping : alighted at the next station and start a to pick my way back. This section was In remarkable contrast with the suoures. All lights Are Our Here the lights were out and only the moon anone down the streets which seemed deserted. From several points in me direction of Unter den Linden cam the sharp crack of rifle shots and tne occasional sputter of machine guns, hut where I tramped over the black glistening asphalt all was auiet. Two blocks from the Kalserhof I was stopped by a sentry with a fixed bayo net, wno appeared like a grey ghost from a post against a wall. I could not pro tean wunoui a written pass, but after I had managed to explain that I had Just come from Holland and showed papers to prove it, he called two more ghosts like himself from nowhere, and put me netween them and so we marched to the Kalserhof. I then understood why I was net allowed to walk merrily there. The note) Had been turned into a fortress. An iron lattice was drawn across the rront door while the whole place was in darkness, save for a feeble light in the nicno iormeriy occupied by the porter, dui now me lair or a formidable mill tary personage, who eyed me with a cer tain degree or suspicion. 'Armed Soldiers Asleep on Floors The marble floor of the magnificent royer: ana me micK crimson carpets on tne grand staircase were covered with soldiers sleeping with rifles and . steel helmets at their sides. The win dows facing- the street were all brist ling, with machine guns while outside tuny equipped and armed guards marched up and down. The hotel mana ger and his wife were conducted from somewhere below stairs. They were sorry tftey could do nothing for me not even give me food. They expected the place to be attacked before morning. The manager kindly offered to eaoort me to another hotel he mentioned. Bo we the manager bareheaded walked . through the lines with the aid of the pass he possessed. But on our arrival at the hotel he had named no amount of ringing and knocking could induce anybody to ap pear at the door although it was only 11:15. .1 told my companion that I could manage and so he left me stand, lng there with my baggage but with out hops of finding a lodging. Haehlse Gas Menses Flnsjjy I discovered a group of rick-ety-looking cabs huddled in a side street. " the drivers smoking and talking in low tones. My request to be; taken to Ufa Hotel Adion in Unter den Linden was ' greeted with laughter. XnposblsM u WRITER THE was tired ef that word), they all said. Unter den Linden was full of machine guns liable to go off at any minute. After much parley I compromised with one of the pirates on the Hotel Espla nade, which I finally reached by a cir cuitous route. ' So here I am. Outside, the big moon shines softly on the stricken., bewildered city. From my room I see thousands of winking street lights, while's yellow glow behind the curtains In the Rouses tells me that Berlin is not sleeping. To morrow I shall go over to see those machine guns.
