THE : OREGON DAILY .'JOURNAL PORTLAND, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19. 1918 14 LETTER TELLS OF LIFE IN HOSPITAL AT YANKEE FRONT Wounded When Coming Out From Influence of Ether Boast : cf Prowess of Their Divisions. PICTURE BURNED ON MEMORY William J. Paeth, Formerly of , the Forest Service, Describes Service With Hospital 46. TAtm In an American base hospital stationed about 30 mile back of the llnea during the big American drives Is most Interestingly told by William 3. "Paeth, formerly supervisor of the Washington national forest service, and at one time assistant in the service here. who has been serving in France since June with the University of Oregon base hospital unit 46, He says In part, ; Writing under date of November 14 : "This base hospital received wounded and sick soldiers during the August, September and October offensives, act- -inr & an emergency evacuation hos pital, receiving wounded direct from the front line dressing stations In ambu lance and from trains during the height of the fighting. . Acts at Litter Bearer ! "My regular assignment In this unit Is with the medical supply ' When re- , ceiving woundedr however, everyone as- . slsted at the convoys, where I acted ' usually as Utter bearer. "The receiving organisation was qutts Important and I am sure effective in our hospital. Men were detailed to unload ambulances, to act as clerks and order lies for examining physicians and sur geons, and those skilled with the razor and hair clippers acted as 'cootie' barbers In the bath house. Everybody ' worked towards receiving the wounded soldier without delay from the ambu lance ; if necessary giving him a bath ' and then delivering the wounded soldier : as speedily as possible to the Red Cross f nurse In the ward, nicely wrapped' up In a clean and sweet lavender scented suit .of flannel pajamas taken from a Red Cross box straight from the folks at home. Once In a -while the lucky one ' found a gay colored necktie and a cheerfdl note, with address attached of : course, in his pajama pocket, which all , . . . , o ,-. How Is Your "Gulebra Cut" ? 4 The Panama Canal is a clear passageway as far as the Culebra Cut. But Gold Hill has a way of slipping into the cut. And ..uritil dredges can dear the channel,' the industrial schedule ot the world is out of tear. How about your own canal ? -The intestinal canal is a clear passageway as far as the large intestine. There, if you become constipated, waste matter is allowed to stagnate. It becomes unnaturally dry And undergoes abnormal fermentation and putrefaction. Germ'actmty is increased. - Your whole system is out of gear. Result, the production of irritating and poisonous substances, which are absorbed into your . blood and carried , all over your body, liable to pro duce' disease anywhere. The longer such stagnation is allowed to exist, the harder it is to clean out the canaL 90 of human disease originates in the "Culebra Cut" If engineers tried to blast out the slide from Culebra Cut they would have mere slides to cope with. If you try to blast out accumulated waste from ytur Culebra Cut with pilhi, salts or purges, you will increase your constipation and next time you will have to take stronger medicine in a larger dose. - You can't dredge ytur canal You can clean it out with Nujol. Nujol softens the mass, and supplies the intestinal canal with sufficient moisture to replace deficient mucus. It causes the obstructive waste matter to pass gently out of your system at a regular hour, absorbing and removing the poisons as it goes Nujol regularity keeps the traffic of your mind and body operating on schedule. You admire the Panama Canal systajm. .Why not safeguard your own? Your druggist has NujoL Warning: NUJOL is- sold only in sealed bottles bearing the Nujol Trade Mark Insist on NuioL You mi jtrr from substitutes. Nujol . Laboratories STANDARD OIL CO. ? Those able to walk were called 'sitters' and' those on stretchers - are called litter cases.' . A few ,v weeks . ago our,;, unit -was -ire-enforced by a few Alabama and Georgia boys. One of them, , being awakened for a convoy about 2 a. m. asked, partly In sleep, 'Are they the carrying kind 7V which means of course that there Is a difference, especially ir there are about 600 cases.-.' ksti.--'--'? "The '' most , prominent ; characteristic of all wounded men to me is their silence except when carrying them back to the ward . from the .operating table, when ether sometimes overcome :thelr self- restraint and the soldier boy tries 'to tell-everybody within hearing that his division is the very best fighting m vision or earth.'- r r-r -T ' ' ' ' - ' Pletsrei Bsrsed ' Memory . "The war- is ver now, Z hope, but certain memories of It are burned in our minds like pictures of madness, to be forgotten if possible but the lesson of It never. " r "At the present time our thoughts will turn towards home 'and we look forward to the time when we may leave France; : The hospitals are being evacu ated of their wounded, and soon per haps the pendulum will swing again towards horse and 'the woods.' "W. A. Dew, once with the Timber man .magazine In Portland, was recently a patient at this hospital. The head quarters of Colonel C. S. Chapman are within a short walking distance of this point, which helps us to feel closer to the forestry engineers though they work far away in that great unknown 'Some where In France.'
