Police Refuse to Stop Prayer Meeting The police were called to the First Presbyterian church Thursday to "close up a prayer meeting," but when they ar rived they found that the 200 worship pers were picking sohagnum moss and that Dr. John H. Boyd was reading to them-out of the Scripture. Between the readings the workers sang church, songs. The police' allowed the workers to pro ceed. Traffic Laws Are Cause of Arrests . Vancouver. Wash., Nov. 1, W. I Clark was yesterday arraigned before Judge Dorr charged with violating the traffic laws. At his request the hear ing was continued until . today. Clark was released on $10 bail. A. AUquist was fined $5 and costs of 3 for alleged violation of the traffic laws. - D. H. Miller pleaded guilty to a viola tion of the traffic ordinance and .was fined $10 and costs. W. It. Kelly, charged with violating the stale' motor vehicle laws, was re leased on $10 Bail. . Heavy Artillery Duels Paris, Nov. 1. (I. N. S.) There were heavy . artillery duels near Guise and west of St. Fergeux, but aside from this there is nothing to report, the French war office announced today. Americans Are' Assisting French in Operation? in Flanders I : Germans Give. Ground. London, Nov. 1, 11 :2S a. m. (I. N. S.) British troops, launched a new attack south of Valenciennes today and are re ported to be making good progress, the war office announced- today. The text of the war office statement fallows: "Successful minor enterprises were carried out by small parties yesterday, and our troops in the neighborhood of LeQuesnoy captured a number of pris oners. "An operation undertaken this' morn ing, south of Valenciennes, is reported to be making good progress." J' Progress Made in Flanders ' London. Nov. 1. (I. N. 8.) "The Flanders group Of French and British armies have made new progress on the Belgian front and have captured a num ber of prisoners," the war office an nounced early today in a special report on Flanders operations." An advance of from three to four miles on a 12-mile front was made by the British and French. Fifteen hundred additional prisoners were taken and high ground overlook ing the Scheldt, river was captured. The attack centered between the Scheldt and the Lys, A Belgian attempt to cross the Derivation canal failed under heavy machine gun fire. i Americans Aid Belgians With the British Army on the' West ern Battle Front, Oct. 31.
