In this case. Dr. Seely t explained that the disease only occurred from, direct contact, but that only two persons were .necessary in the circulation department to provide contact. ' Utilisation of The Auditorium as a temporary hospital : for - "influenza" . pa tients Is proving beneficial to that class of persons who are wlthour means to provide private treatment.' The hospital is now able to care for more than 100 patients .and everything; is in first class working order, following Mayor Baker's prompt action In assembling: the neces sary supplies, equipment ' and staff of nurses and physicians. ' .-City health office records today , .- showed that 13 new cases of influensa and Spanish Influensa had been report ed in by physicians, bringing the total to 600. Seven deaths have resulted thus far from pneumonia complications. .The advisability of reopening the schools of the city and state was dls - cussed at a meeting of the state board of health with public school superln tendeats. at, the , Portland, hotel, .this morning. Both Mr. Grout, J. A. Churchill, state superintendent, .and, W. C. Alderson. county superintendent, agreed : to. co operate with the board of health in dis seminating any literature upon the methedt of prevention and control of Spanish influensa, and to instruct their toachero to keep a close watch of the chlldrtn and nd any child home Im mediately upon any symptoms of the diseare. . Selestists File . Petlttoa Christian Scientists of the city made a petition to the state board of health through Mrs. Daisy C O. Baird. asking that they might be allowed to hold church services, on the ground that there was no danger because of the na ture of their belief. Dr, A. C. Seely. president of the board of health, replied that the board bad no authority to grant any privileges to any particular sect over any other ; but were carrying out the orders of the surgeon-general In pre venting contact by public meetings. At the opening of the meeting Dr. U K It.
