The Parent-Teacher club of Ockley Green school will entertain Friday eve ning in honor of the new principal, W. A, Dickson, and the new teachers added to the faculty this term. Mr. Dickson comes to the Ockley Green school from Wood mere school to take the place of E. H. Whitney, who was recently appointed as sistant superintendent of city schools. A call for recruits in this line for actual service abroad waa answered enthusiastically by prom inent young women, who have been acting .in volunteer work; for the Amer ican Red Cross In the molor squad corps. The applicants far outnumbered the demand but a few. who passed an the many regulations and requirements made by Uncle. 8am. were finally se lected, and these young women are now serving a strenuous apprenticeship.' jsany in. the mornings they sally forth percnea nign on motor trucks, not tour ing cars, and drive in and out of the moat congested streets back up to vari ous basement entrances and otherwise prove their skill as real drivers. Then comes the ' care of the engines, which they carry out under the guidance of skilled mechanics, flat on their backs beneath the cars. Punctures and various tire troubles and eccentricities are to be thoroughly mastered. As a last word of efficiency they-are to be turned loose. it Is stated, on the streets of New York city prior to sailing overseas, there to make their wax? under the difficulties of congested traffic All these things might be 'easy, but the service is a real one to the country and not in any way a holiday as laid out under Red Cross regulations. When once overseas no friends may be looked up or communicated, with. Strict mil itary discipline will prevail and the hours are to' be largely a matter of en durance and necessity, as field service men returning from the front have al ready testified. But the Utile People were so scared that all who could climb trees were up ia tne tops peeking through the branches, to get a glimpse of the monster.
