Bed Time Teddy Possum Shows Peter Rabbit ' a Strange Sight. v i r.NE night Teddy Possum was hunt- V me around Mirror Pond for frogs ; and a voice cried out behind a clump of aiders, "Hello there, Teddy Pos sum, what mischief are you up to now?" And Teddy knew the voice ; and he turned his head, and saw. Peter Rabbit, peeking through the bushes. "Peter ;Rab blc, do you want to see a wonderful sight?" asked-Teddy Possum. j "Yes, I want to see any strange sight," answered the curiaus Peter Rabbit. So Teddy and Peter ran through the woods to see a strange sight indeed ; And this was Mother Possum's Kinder garten. She had 12 pupils in her! Kin dergarten ; and all were of the i same age and had the same birthday and every pupil answered "present"' when the teacher opened the school. And Peter Rabbit opened his eyes as big as goose eggs, when he saw this lovely kindergarten among the ; white birches. Teddy Possum and Peter Rab bit had hidden behind a big white birch tree, so as not to disturb the school. For the teacher was very strict indeed and she never allowed any visitors. clean, fascinating, carefully selected. Health arc reanired. Vakh of 18 and 36 are preferred: necessary. Our employment Sixth Floor. Room 60 1. in th War Auxiliaries Meet in Court House Adjutant General to Recommend Exemption Buttons; Council Not Indorsed. By Nona Lawlr SEVERAL, matters of especial interest came before the weekly meeting Mon day afternoon of the war auxiliaries cen tral committee which gathered together representatives of the various army aux iliaries at the courthouse, room 201. to discuss business of general interest to their work for the boys in the service. A letter was read from the adjutant general's office in Washington. D. C. which thanked the Portland central com mittee for a suggestion recently made by them that the government furnish an ex emption button for all men exempted from the service because of physical dis qualification for the army atifi navy or honorably discharged from the service due to no fault of their own. He thanked them not only for tbe suggestion but for the patriotic spirit that prompted them and stated that the matter would be Dlaced before congress by the war de partment. An Invitation was also read from the War Mothers of America Inviting rep resentatives from the Portland auxillar les to convene with them at Evansville, Ind.. in the first War Mothers' council which has been held in America. Inasmuch as the government has re quested people not to travel unnecessar ily and as the volume of work laid out by the American Red Cross and other of ficial sources with their individual work for the boys at the front already taxes these organizations to the limit of their time, it was the voice of the women at tending the meeting not to recommend to their various auxiliaries that delegates be sent. The invitation will, however, be read before each auxiliary. League for 'Woman's Service The Army School or rsursing es tablished by the surgeon general of the army. Is calling for more student nurses, and the government Is relying on the patriotism of American women to fill up the ranks made vacant by Tale ' X Some little Possums were riding pick a-back on top of the Teacher's back. "Teddy Possum," whispered Peter Rabbit, "this is only a play school ! Why don't the pupils have some lessons to get?" "Oh, you little silly, this is the play hour," whispered Teddy Possum. "You keep your eyes open, and you'll see some fun. You know, I attended this kindergarten when I was a kid ; and I had that same teacher." "Why, that's strange, you never told me before that you ever attended a kindergarten, when you were a baby," exclaimed the excited Peter Rabbit. And then Peter had to clap both hands over his mouth to keep from snickering out loud. For the teacher ran around in a circle. In the silver monlight ; and the 12 lltle possums were all over her back and sides. Some little Possums were riding pick-a-back, on top of the teacher's back ; and others were cling ing to her sides, and some were holding on to the fur of her stomach and legs, by their teeth! "It was indeed comical to see the teacher circle among those white birches, while the whole school was rid ing on the back and sides of their teacher. And Peter whispered to Teddy Pos sum, "Why, Teddy, I wouldn't have missed this wonderful sight for the world. Why, It is better than a circus. Is this the kindergarten where you learned all your great tricks with your marvelous rope-like tail?' "Oh. yes, Peter," whispered Teddy, "I had hundreds of tail-lessone and head-lesaons in this splendM school." Tomorrow Teddy Possum's Sister and Brother Are Iost.
