OUTPUT OF POTATOES WILL BE BETTER AS RESULT OF SHOWERS Improvement of Note Is Shown Re cently in Willamette Valley Short Acreage Will Pull Total Produc tion Below the Normal. Quite liberal improvement is shown in the condition of the potato crop of the Willamette valley. Daring th. last week or tea days the Improvement has been marked in practically all sections ef the valley. In places where it was believed that practically na crop would be grown thi season, the present showing is for about half the normal production while generally speaking the showing la close to three quarters the normal output per acre. Even this Improvement in the condition of the crop and the outlook for a better produc tion per acre than had been previously expected, will not mean' a really big erop this season. In fact owing to the greatly decreased area planted in this, section as well as in other Pacific Northwest centers, the total erop will be con siderably below the normal even under the best of growing condition later in the season. This is keeping' the market for potatoes here fairly steady at the' high prices recently in ef fect. Early Price Gains Made m Shares; Buying Is Liberal New York, Aug. 8. tl. N. S. The teel (teck were in brisk demand all through the rly trading ef the stock market today with those issues making gains over the highest prices touched yesterday. Steel common reflected con tinued accumulation, advancing 4 to 109 and there was the same persistent buying of Baldwin Locomotive, which made that stock a' main feature yesterday. Today it waa steadily taken advancing to 9814. American Sumatra raae 34 to 13214. Mex ican Petroleum also showed a stronger .tone, ad vancing 4 to 101 H. Utah Copper declined 4 to 80 and (mail fractional losses were sustained in other copper sfcsre. Reading was the only active railway issue, ad vancing H to 88 H. The new allied offensive was an incentive for vigorous buying of steel common, which moved up 1 point to 110 and similar advance were made in most of the other active issues. BELT LINE HELD SOLUTION Belief Expressed That Railroad Will Not Be Built Until Public Sentiment Forces-ft. Believing that the belt railway plan t the only solution for the harbor traf fic problem ajid that there will be no such belt railway until public demands force such action, the commission of public docks this morning; refused to re duce wharf are on lumber at the, St. Johns municipal terminal to meet the differential In switching rates between that dock and the upper harbor termi nals. The wharfage cost for lumber Is ofPI cents, and switching charges from St. Johns are about 25 centa mora than from the upper terminals. To equalize this and to encourage the handling of lumber over the open dock at Pittsburg street it was proposed to reduce tha wharfage to 25 cents. Members ex pressed the view that as long as unjust Avitching rates are absorbed bv the commission. stepa"oaver will be taken to eliminate the real difficulty and to get a permanent solution. Although It is more expensive to han dle lumber In the closed docks. It is being taken there because of the switch ing differential. It ia probable the com mission will, refuse to handle lumber over any but the open dock at Pittsburg street In the near future. General in creases in wharfage and handling were ordered to meet increased labor costs. At the meeting of the commission this morning It was decided to permit the Kerr-Otfford company to erect Its cereal mill adjoining the Albina dock without the asbestoa covering as at first re quired, but the crib construction fire wall, some 65 feet high, was left in the provisions,- despite protests of the mill ing company. It was pointed out that without the fire wall proDertv to the north for several hundred feet would be endangered. The W. E. & E. von der Werth com pany asked permission to moor Its ficating machine shops at the foot of Columbia street, vacating the East Mor rison frontage on the river at the be hest of the Emergency Fleet corporation to give more room for outfitting ships. No action was taken, pending the set tlement of the request of the Barber Asphalt company for use of rrounrl at the same location. The contingent fnind waa Increased from $10,000 t5 $15,000, that there may be sufficient money on hand to meet the payrolls and- other demands. Robert Warrack, superintendent of lighthouse inspection in the Seventeenth district, today received a report from J. M. Cowan, keeper of the station near which the Canada Maru, Japanese steamer, went ashore July 30. Accord, ing to the report, the captain. Y. A rtjstass s4 a mT www . . . iii warraeic, there are silent zones around Can s7i..,.n. where the .whlatle can sometimes not be heard, but never before has this been reported from the south, always before being to the west and north. South of the whistle 18 miles It was dis tinctly heard. It is considered probable by some mariners that In the fog the captain mistook the signal on the south of the channel for the one on the north and was steering accordingly. Superintendent Warrack asks for re ports from mariners who fall to hear the signal at the cape. Records show It was operating properly the day of the accident.
