M Yet but 1900 residents of Portland have agreed to open their private homes to furnish sleeping quarters for the vet erans who are willing to pay for what they get. - Twn weeks from Friday all the old soldiers in the dty will expect a free I trip over the Columbia river highway by automobile. It wants every Portland resident to regard himself as a special host during the week of the national encampment and to seek the chance to make It pleas ant for the O. A. R. It wants every Portlander to wear a mile all of G. A. R. week. It wants every Portlander to shake hands with as many visitors as he can reach. It wants every Tortlander to get Into th game. The housing committee for the O. A. XL will designate men to go out on the railroads to meet the special trains that are coming. Old soldiers will be as signed to rooms before they reach the city, and-those who come' on the regular trains will be- escorted" from the Union station to Liberty temple for registra , tlon and assignment to rooms. Then the boys of '61 will be sent out to their domi ciles by automobile or by streetcar. Counters are to be placed In the tem ple to accommodate the committee, and It Is probable a huge booth will be ar ranged at the'Union station. -Floweri for Parade General Charles F. Beebe, chairman of the -Portland committee on entertain ment, yesterday expressed the hope that verybpdy would conserve their roses, sweet peas and other blooms for the pa rade of TuesdayAugust 20. It will- be the last time that people of this citr or on the Pacific Coast will ever see the remnants of the armies of Grant and Sherman, Lincoln's boys In blue, pass through the streets, and Gen eral Beebe w-ants to nff Portland citi zens show the flower 'spirit. "I would like to suggest that we cover the pavement with flowers," said the chairman.
