La Grande, Union county and the La Grande Evening Observer are getting into vigorous action in preparation for the War Saving Stamp drive. Particularly noticeable is the manner in which the advertisers of La Grande are coming to the support of. the War Saving Stamp cause, as shown by the La Grande Observer. The large ma jority of the advertisers of the city have donated space ordinarily used by them to the furtherance of the War Stamp drive, while the news columns of the paper show that great interest is being taken by the business people and citizens gen erally In the work. A big rally was held last Tuesday, at which Governor Withy combe was the principal speaker, while many of the prominent business and pro fessional men of the city and county were also on the program pledging their assistance in the campaign just being launched. Frederick L. Meyers, county chairman for Union county in the War Savings Stamp campaign, has been particularly and consistently active In the promotion of the preliminary work leading dp to the drive, and has made effective effort towards the organization of the county workers in preparation for the big drive that Is to be staged on June 28, the day set aside by President Wilson as "Pledge Day." At this time the public Is ex pected to sign cards pledging their reg ular subscriptions in sufficient amounts Sore "Aims' Prevail -In Camp at Presidio ail of lMt Kn at Tralalag Camp JU eeverlag Frost Third Iajeetloa sf Ty phoid Prophylaetlet Worklsg Hard. FUEL SURVEY YILL LIST NAMES OF COAL USERS AND NEEDS All Consumers in Oregon, Except Householders, Will Be Listed in Order of Necessity. to put Oregon over the top In raising its quota. All consumers of coal In Oregon, ex cept householders, will be listed and classified Immediately by Fuel Adminis trator Holmes in accordance with the distribution program of the United States administration. The names of consumers and their needs and the kind of work their enterprises are engaged in will be gathered as rapidly as possi ble. The survey is being made in response to a request from Judge Edwin B. Parker, priorities commissioner, and presages the Issuance of a preference list under which industries engaged in war work will be given the first call on available fuel. In a statement just issued the war industries board discovers the creation at this time of industries which will uti lize fuel, materials and men which will not contribute directly or indirectly to ward the winning of the war. The board, however, has not endeavored to classify any legitimate business enter prise as '-non-essential," and later when the fuel preference lists are published every effort will be made to supply all Industries with their requirements as nearly as possible. It must be borne in mind, however, that essential Indus tries will have first call on fuel. The steps now being taken by the government Indicate that Oregon, along with the remainder of tlte nation, will be forced to curtail fuel consumption. Preparations Made t T-1 1-1 1 1 T"li .
