" Coal boilers are said to have been specified because of the fuel problems confronting the French and be cause of the shortage of Diesel type en gineers who are willing to go to France. The fuel for the schooners takes up much room, but this question is not Important In view of the fact that the. vessels are said to be destined for the most part to carry fuel cargoes from British ports to France.:; VESSEL MAKES GOOD Trial Trip of Cptalne Remy Exceeds " Requirements of Test. The Capltaine Remy, Foundation com pany product, .Which enjoyed a very successful six hour trial trip' on the river Tuesday, is reported to have been chartered to A. F. Thane Co. for the French government, her owner, by the Thordyke-Trenholme company of Se attle. The Capltaine Remy will be ready for cargo late this week and unless a change Is made In plans announced some tlmo ago she will load spruce for Ha vana at a Columbia river port With members of the Foundation com pany, their guests and representatives of the French government aboard the Remy, the vessel exceeded the required trial trip speed of nine knots over her 64 mile course. - She was piloted by Cap tain Richard Sandstrom and K. Johnson was the ship's chief officer. David Bell acted as chief engineer. In addition to handling charter plans for the Foundation company products at the Portland, Tacoma and Victoria plants, Thorndyke-Trenholme A Co. have other business in this community. They recently completed the transfer of the first Klernan & Kern schooner, John Klernan, to French interests, who will operate the vessel under the Amer ican flag, at least for the present. The United States shipping board sanctioned 'the transfer perfected by I. N. Day- of Klernan A Kern and J. D. Trenholme of the agent company. The John Klernan has 130.000 cubic feet of cargo space in her hold and is listed at 2750 tons deadweight,, although she Is designed- to carry 4000 cubic tons of freight She is 248 feet long, has a 44 foot beam and 17 foot depth of .hold. The Seattle agents are - negotiating for her charter. - --..---.'. HAS MANY. Or ? TALENT Albina Engine A Machine 'Works ' , Boasts of Many Stars. - Publicly the men or the Albina Engine & Machine works force are declaring themselves wonders In many lines and in testimony point out the recent tribute to their band by Dr. 3. Havergal Shep- pard of New .York, who declared that the Albina musicians were the best he had. heard in a shipyard anywhere be tween New York and vorUand. Aside from the band the ' Cornfoot plant claims H. A. Smith , as the cham pion high diver of trie - world, with a record of 215 feet. Ed Kennedy is a bright light as a wrestler, not to men tion' his baseball ability, for he traveled as a wrestling partner or the late Frank Gotch. C. F. List deserves a place in the half of fame as a passenger of one of the pioneer submarines, and L. L. Hawthorne, a member of the band, is more than ordinarily distinguished as the conductor of a unique band whose musical members are his wife and three children. ANOTHER HULL LAUNCHED Sommarstrom Company at Columbia ' City Launches Mattapan. At 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon1 the Hough type wooden hull for the steam er Mattapan was launched by the Sommarstrom Shipbuilding company at Columbia City, making the second craft to take to-. the water from the ways of that company. Mrs. Marie Johanson, wife of a Sommarstrom superintendent, was sponsor" for the launching. Mem bers of the shipping board were guests at the event. The Mattapan Is junior by a month of the Musketo, launched at Columbia City on May 14. She is now tied up at the Sommarstrom dock and later will be brought to Portland for outfitting. Immediately upon the launching of the Mattapan the Sommarstrom force laid a keel for a Ferris type and in addition has three other Hough hulls on the ways In various stages of construc tion. - STEAMER FIRE INVESTIGATED V "If you had seen me working in the Bed Cross drive last week you wouldn't have thought I was the same woman who. Just a little while ago. was so weak I could scarcely drag one foot after the other," said Mrs. Carrie Flaher of i4 Eaat Seventy-aecond Street. In telling the other day of her remarkable experience with Tanlac "All my life.' she continued. "I had been a great aufferer from Indigestion and 1 hardly remember the time when I didn't have trouble of some kind with my stomach. Most everything I would at soured and formed gas that gave me ' a stuffy feeling, and even sweet milk seemed to curdle and form a hard ball i in my stomach, and I was In misery night and, day. Some years ago I was operated on for appendicitis, but that -did not relieve my stomach trouble and .- my - condition became so much worse . that Z was advised to have an operation for ulcerated stomach : but I did not want to submit to the knife a second time, so put It off. hoping I might find some other means of relief. But. though I ' tried all sorts of medicines, nothing did me any good, and what, with this awful . condition of my stomach, the terrible pains In my back and right side and splitting .headaches that lasted 24 hours at a time without a single letup, I felt like I would surely go distracted. , "This was the fix I was in when I j decided to try Tanlac. Well,. I have Just about finished my third bottle now - and. I am Improving every day. 1 can eat any and everything without suf ertng from gas or Indigestion, even weet milk agrees with me and many . ether things that I didn't dare vto touch. ' before. Those awful pains are . fast leaving me. I never have a headache now at all and I can do all my house work now without getting tired. Why, r to show you how much stronger and better I am since I began taking- Tan lac, I worked hard for two whole days last' week, going from house to house Collecting for the Red Cross, which I could no more have done before taking Tanlao than I can fly. Tanlao is a wonderful medicine and I am going to keep on with it as long as I get such gooq results as I am now." Tanlac Is on sale in Portland by The uwi . Jjrng company. (Adv.) The Paloma, 137 gross trJhs, took fire early in the morning of June 7 and was badly burned forward. For Miss Walker, who has seen service- in Franca and wants to return, Inadvertently married A. M. Stauffer, connected with the army base hospital at -Camp Dodge, Iowa. Inadvertently not that she does not love him. but that she did not "know there Is a rule in the Red Cross prohibiting attached women to enter overseas, duty. When they were married last March, It was to have been a secret" a sort of "solemn engagement to wed" rather than a marriage, she say.
