In his lecture Thursday flight at The Auditorium. A large throng of Port land people, heard his message, complied from facts gathered by himself from all fronts of the European blood-wallow. From It all the speaker deduced one great conclusion: That the nation which goes to war when this conflict Is over will be looked upon as a com mon criminal. There will be no more war, h asserted, because the people are now reaching the point of view that will make It Impossible. war' niaeiignis ueiaiea He prayed for the time when the three great allies England, France and America will dictate the international program whicn win mane armaments to cease and "lrrepresible autocracy" to lose its power. Masefield expressed keen regret for the trouble of a century ago that sun dered England from the colonies, ex pressing the hope that time had fuliy healed the wound and that the union of English-speaking peoples would make firm the common cause now being 'waged. The lecture was rich in sidelights of war. The speaker told of the red mists overhanging ruined villages brick dust. He told of the unromHntlc aspect of the first-line trench on a quiet day here and there a group of men In a ditch, cooking or playing cards or picking ver min from one another. He told of the ruin wrought by shellH earth flying through the air In such quantities as to bury one. Along the rondsides of the eastern front he told of finding Btarvlng refu gees, bones of soldiers, of civilians, of babies. In the actual zone of fighting, he said, there Is to be seen no green thing. Trees are laid low. either by artillery or by wanton ax. Shell holes filled with imud are "Ukie great eyes looking up at the sky." This, he declared. Is a war of car riers. Just as the Germans were beaten back at the Marne because' their carrier system failed and because the French : carriers did not, so is this period of the war dependent upon the same.
