Warden Murphy denies published re ports that Keller and Smith engaged ' in a, fight when Keller nabbed Smith as ' he was being released from serving a term In San Quentln prison, and de clares that Smith agreed to return vol -.' antarlly to Oregon with Keller until Smith's lawyer got Into communication With him and caused Smith to change his mind. Murphy said Smith's mother was with . the convict and both consented to : Smith's return to Oregon, and that Kel ler took Smith to Oakland where he was permitted to spend a day visiting his two children, and It was not until after that that Smith resisted Keller's plans, lafter Smith refused to return to Oregon , and Keller got Into trouble, Keller tele graphed Oovernor Wlthycombe to send requisition papers, in the meantime ha beas corpus proceedings were instituted to obtain Smith's release. ; , - Smith was released from the county , Jail, but Warden Murphy , had him re arrested on' a warrant charging him with being a fugitive from Justice and bad him placed in the city Jail. This held Smith until requisition papers were taken to Sacramento and extradition ' was granted by Oovernor Stephens. Juror Skips Trial 1 To Enlist in Navy Santa Rosa, Cal., March IS. (V. E.) Because Earl I Hlcklln is more inter ested in . seeing that Kaieer Wllhelm gets what's coming to him than in the fate of Wong Bow, Chinese, the Sonoma superior court has a bench warrant out for him. Hlcklln was serving on the jury in the case of Wong Bow accused of arson. When court convened Tuesday there were but 11 Jurors in the box. Hlcklln had gone to San Pedro and Joined the United States naval reserve in training there. The bench warrant was immediately Issued, but in the meantime the court la trying: to devise a way of finishing its case with 11 juror. A Btrange phenomenon is disclosed as a result of Secretary Daniels' drastlo order closing the saloons within a five- mile radius of permanent training camps which goes into effect Saturday, March IS. Not a single organised protest has been received by the department against the enactment of the law. The only movement "that could be. classed as protest was the reception of a, commit tee of Annapolis saJoonmen, headed by their congressman, which asked, for further time In order to close out their business. As far as is known there Is but one brewery affected by this order and its owner could not protest the order but asked in a round about manner if the order affected his establishment in the manufacture of beer and its sale to private families, in the city. He waa informed that the brewery would have to close. Frank Godsol Denies Profiteering Charge Washington, March It. Frank Godsol, Under arrest here on charges of reaping illegal profits from French war con tracts Tuesday made blanket denial of charges that he was active in German propaganda work. Answering reported statements of Deputy Assistant Attorney General Alfred I Becker of New York. Godsol denied that he ever knew of any "Germanic War Films, inc" or- that Benjamin BlumenthaU whom he admit-' ted he "knew," had been associated with him. 15,000 Camp Lewis Soldiers Will Sing Camp Lewis, Wash.; March 13. Fifteen thousand men singing to gether will be heard in a few days In the Montana building now in the-course of construction on the parade grounds at the oamp under the direction of Robert Lloyd. The new building will be finished by the time Mr. IJoyd . returns from San Francisco, where he goes Wednesday on a 10-day leave, and it is then that he plans to have the 15,000 men come into the building and sing popular marching songs which he Is now teaching them. That a large convalescent home will be built near the base hospital at Camp Kearney, -was the information given out by Keith; Spalding of Chicago and Colo nel 1 George FJlmer of San Francisco. Messrs. Spalding and Filmer are on a tour of inspection of military relief work for the Red Cross in the United States. The building, when completed, will form a huge cross as a symbol of the organisation and will be boon to the convalescent soldiers, as every conven ience' has been . thought of, even to accommodations for visiting relatives who may wish to remain at the camp over night.
