Eight 'years ago the first Sunday' in February I began, my pastorate at the Temple Baptist church In Los, Angeles. I now have the pleasure of introducing to the people of Portland, Or, and the members of the First Baptist church in particular, Rev. William A. Waldo, Ph. L., 'who begins ' his pastorate on the first Sunday in February. I do not know how I could wish for him and for the .people of the White Temple anything more than to express the hope that this new pastorate begin ning on this first Sunday in February may continue-as long, and be as abund antly blessed of God, as were the years which 1 spent in your great and beau tiful city.; There is no reason why Dr. Waldo's pastorate i should not be the most pros perous the church has ever known in its history. . He is a man of splendid ability, wide experience and thoroughly SUNDAY IS THRIFT DAY IN CHURCHES IN THE UNITED STATES Local Headquarters Appeal Pastors of City to Assist in Work. to OMORROW is "National Thrift Day" and in all- churches "Thrift" will be the tfxt for , consideration, special emphasis being placed on the importance of the government's War Savings Stamp campaign at this time. From local headquarters of the state W. S. S. organization, the following let ter has been sent to the "Ministers of All Denominations" : This comma; Sunday has been set apart as "National Thrift, Day a day when it is hoped the attention, of the people of the country, may be- called to the importance of saving, when a Na tional Thrift Campaign' may be inaugu rated. May I ask you for an observance or that day in your church? A sermon. or even 'a brief heart-to-heart talk with your congregation on 'Thrift and the War Savings campaign, would give to una work a stimulus that it could not have from any other source. "Thrift.-on the part of our people, and the purchase of Thrift Stamps and War Savings Certificates, mean not only to help win' the war, but they mean better civic and social conditions when the war is -over, , something in which everv preacher, teacher and all good citizens generally, are vitally interested. For that reason I feel .you will cheerfully co operate In this very necessary- work." Rev. Mr. Beers to i Give Two Sermons ; Rev. Alexander sBers, pastor of the First Free Methodist church, East Ninth and ;East Mill streets, will deliver two special sermons Sunday,' which will con clude a series of sermons he has been preaching on" lessons drawn from the children of Israel. In the morning he will take for his subject, "Moral Battles and . Spiritual Triumphs." "This sermon will show the true philosophy and ethi cal relations of difficulties In the Chris tian's way, and the triumphs over Jthem," says the pastor. In the evening the pastor will take for his subject, "Coats of Many Colors," which he says will deal with guises of insincerity and hypocrisy, and will also emphasize the necessity of transparency of life.
