WARNING TO THIS NATION All Food Shops Closed on Sun days and Hojidays; Only Part of Hotel Rooms Heated. fc Extreme measures betns; taken by Switzerland to conserve ner fuel and food suppUes are described in a bulletin received by Oregon Food Administrator W. B. Ayer from the United States au thorities. The information Is given out as a guide and warning to the American people who, in a less degree, are apply ing the same methods of economy en forced by the great war necessities. The Information follows: "The war has made a complete wall around little Switzerland, the last .move being the closing of the German frontier. In a way. the world for her now extends no further than her own boundaries, for she must now completely sustain her self, as commodities can no longer cross her 'sealed' borders. Rations Cut gome "This means that extreme measures must be taken in regard to her fuel and food supplies, if they are to hold out. The people there are now being rationed at one pound of sugar per person per month; rice cards are Issued which al io"? one pound per person per month ; the bread cards allow , one half pound of bread per person per day and this in cludes biscuits and cakes, though, need less to say, riot many of the latter are being bought; only one pound of flour per month per person is allowed ; but ter is selling at 84 cents a pound and " upwards and bacon at from 60 cents a pound up. "What Switzerland is doing to meet the fuel and food situation in public places Is indicated by official decrees Issued in Geneva. "All shops where food is sold must be closed on Sundays and holidays. Bread and milk, however, may be delivered between the hours of 10 and 12 in the morning. On other days, all shops open at half past eight in the morning, with the exception of bakers, milk and "Butcher shops, which may open at half j past seven. All shops, including those) where food is sold must be closed Xy seven In the evening, with the exception 1 of hair dressers and pharmacists who j may prolong their worKyffil &gWfca&Z ; The hairdressers, however, may not sell ; anything during this time. "Hotels, tons, coffee houses and res taurants must not be opened or heated before 9 o'clock, unless they serve break fasts regularly : and they must all close at 11' o'clock In the evening, except on Saturday, when they may remain open an hour longer. None of them may serve hot drinks or dishes after 9 o'clock at night. Warm Only Part of Boons "One very uncomfortable -restriction does not permit the heating- of more , than one quarter of the rooms in hotels and inns. It is also forbidden to have running hot water in the toilet rooms, corridor or bed rooms. "Casinos, theatres, movies, cafe-concert bars and other places of amuse ment may present their program but four days in the week, from 7 to 11 In the evening, with the exception of the two most noted theatres of Geneva, which are allowed to give performances fve days. "An Interesting feature of this severe ruling lies in the exceptions thereto. Even war cannot slay human, nature, and most of these regulations have Christmas-tide exceptions. At that sea son there may be a little more amuse ment, a little more good "cheer. In order that even a war barricaded nation may warm its heart in the Christmas glow.' London Press Backs ; Words of Premier '. Express and Tines. Praise Disclaimer That Britain' Aim Are SelflshrXcws and Post Criticise Portions of Speech. London, Dec ' 22. (U. P.) Premier i Lloyd George's emphatic disclaimer that Britain had selfish aims of extending ..her territory through the war brought almost universal approval from the Lon ' don press today, -We fear It may be difficult to de - t ermine the wishes of the Inhabitants of f the various former German colonies." said the Express, "but the Influence of the United States In the peace confer ence will Insure that commercialism will cot count more than humanitarian Ism." : - "The premier again showed the falsity or the charge that our aim is conquest, was the Times comment. - - "The speech was not aiVxpl!ctt state ment of war aims, the News criticized, i "but it was an admission of the Justice of. the demand for that statement of aims." The Post found fault with omission by IJoyd George of "the application of compulsion to Ireland,' and bitterly con demned the league of nations idea.
