V THE OREGON , DAILY JOURNAL, PORT LAND, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, -1917. 21 - DAIRYMEN PAY HIGHER INSTEAD OF LOWER FEED -PRICES Edited by Hyman H. Cohem CALIFORNIA ONIONS HEM SO POOR THAT TRADE JIS REJECTING T :t ' Lajw Priced Stuff Is Finally Pot In High rrlced Class Because It Is High at Any Price- tcal Prowers Asking $2.65 F. O. B. While the lower prloe and poor vqoallty California atock bu temporarily mined the Ml and market for superior quality Ore-oo onions, there are strong Indication that wltb tn a abort time th Ideal atock will again cemroand general aale. Ihirtng the laat few day there baa been practically no movement of Oregon onions from the band of Willamette valley rrowers, due to the fact that the trade of the coaat had recently purchased ita requirement of the cheaper-priced Californiana. Ixwer price quoted by the California onion Interests waa too tempting a bait for the trade to let go and the reault -ras that there waa no demaud for the Oregon atock while a liberal movement of the southern, product et In tbl direction. Now that the California atock baa arrWed In tbla territory the trade baa found that low-priced onion are sometime very high priced and thl I one of the Instance where they are In the latter claaa. Quality of th California stock ha been most disappointing to the northern trad and saaoy rejection of carload lota are reported. J.ocsl growers are in the meantime alttlng tight and are not being stampeded. According to W. I. 8wnk. general aelUng repreaenU tiTe of the Confederate Onion Growera' aaeo elatloa the organlaatloo baa been offering onion at $2.e& t. o. b. country shipping point but that little bualneea baa reaulted on account of th urplu of poor quality Cali fornia stock., CHICKENS ARE CLEANED UP A very liberal purchase of practically all the chickens along Kront street by a northern firm, cleaned up etery thing In sight here dur ing the 84 hour and price for all poultry are firm. - Fresh Fish Scarce With Prices High In Portland Trade The fresh fish trade is suffer ing as & result of the great scar city of supplies generally and the Increased Remand. But little sal mon Is coming forward, and the offerings of halibut are so limited even at 20 cents a pound that the trade's wants are not supplied. A few Columbia river tomcod are. ar riving and selling at 10 cents a pound. Crabs continue scafce. BAD FAITH CHARGED TURKEYS ARE COMING FASTER Homcwnat more liberal supp.lieiof turkey re coming forward to the local maraei, oui the demand Is farorable -and price are well maintained at li8830c a pound for beat dressed atock. i " BUTTER MARKET IS DRAGGING Very draggy tone cofltlnuee In the butter trade here a well as elsewhere In the Pa cific Northwest. 1'ricea for best known brand are unchanged but ahaded flgutea are for other ottering. Hies Are Higher With Leather Firm Eastern'3Iarkets Erratic But Local Trade Is Paying Rise Tal low Also Up. Sharp adranee are being quoted In the market for hidea in Portland a a result or Improved trade conditions throughout the country generally. Advance here In general are from 1 to 2c a pound and are due mostly to the fact that the leather market in the East has ahowa liberal strength recently. Additional heary purchase of shoe by various government is the big factor In the hide aa well as the leather market at this time, although prices in both lines, at eastern centers hare been rather erratic of late. Dry flint calf ekins snow a rise of 3c a pound at 33c here. Along with the .advances In bides comes the announcement by the H. F. Norton "company of a rise of lc a pound in cascara. or chi t torn bark to 8c a pound net weight. Tallow prices' have also hardened and are op 2c with No. 1 at 13c a pound. February . . . aMrch March April May June July August November . , l-ecember .. , By Hyman H. Cohen Dairy , interest ar very much concerned over the advance of $1.00 a . ton charged! for mlllstuff by miller of .the Pacific Northwest in the face of the promises of food : ad ministration authorities some time ago that prices would be lower instead of higher. Dairymen say that the miller have : ab solutely broken faith with them and that the situation Is serious. Some time ago when the price of wheat waa fixed by the government and it baa not been changed since then, dairymen were promised that they would secure bran at $25 a, ton or around that price. Recently the general price for thla product in the Northwest ha' been around 3O.0Og3l.d0 a ton, "but during the day the price - was boosted to $31.00S2.00, the latter for ear- load lota with shorts at $34.0035.00 a ton. Millets on tbe.otner hand assert that they are justified in making the $1.00 advance on account of not only the extreme eall for ralllsrtiffa, which ia taking all stoek in sight, but the fact that even at the advance the price of stuffs is materially lower .than either oats or barley. MlHors ' made a cut of 20c per barrel In tbe price of patent flour, which placed the, market at $10 for leading brands, but some of the smaller plants are selling below this. Many complaints have - been received from the country recently regarding the pricea charged for both flour and millstnff and it is reported that the fight will be carried on to the headquarters of tbe food administra tion In Washington.
