per mile on the rock was 6 cents
On oil the cost per barrel was 84
cents.
The cost of operating the truck was
$270.65, as follows: Salaries driver
and helpers, $175; lubricating oil and
grease, $2.38; gasoline, $29.99; tires
and repairs, $63.18

The work was begun -several months
ago and only little progress) has been
made. The Indications are now that
there is a possibility It will not be I
completed before the rainy season
Delays In getting material on the
ground are the principal cause of de
lay. The sand' Is shipped from Port
land and the gravel from Independ
ence. Only a, tew carloads at a time
can be secured. After a batch' - Is
worked un the laborers get employment
elsewhere and when a new supply of
material 4s at hand It is necessary to
gather a new crew.
Country storekeepers and farmers
don their overalls and help out until
the supply Is exhausted. Thus It goes
from on batch to another.
In the early stages of . the wofk
there was a long delay In getting ce
ment, but this has been overcome.
Bids for this work were called for
last May, but were all rejected because
they were consideded too high. The
delays encountered .f have mad, tha
work more expensive than the state
highway department figured, and the
final coat will be In excess of the
amount which, contractors -offered to
do It for.

The original plan of the state high
way commission to Show no favoritism
as to the east and' west side branches
of the Pacific highway but to develop
both as through routes contemporsy
neously has been changed and- prefer
ence Is to be given to the east sldel
route.
The reason for this change of policy
Is the report of Commissioner Adamr
that the county courts of Yamhill and
Folk counties had reached an agree
ment that the highway between Mc-
Minnville and Dallas should be routed !
by way of Ballston with a stub road
from McMinnville to Amity. In vlewJ
of this decision the highway commis

treat the west side road as a local

As a result the commission will not
be In a hurry about improving It but
will give first attention .to the east
side route, making it the main thor-
