RE ARE DUE TO MALICE Inspectors Make Examination of Heating Plant at Univer ; sity of Oregon, ' For several months stories to the effect that the boilers used in tbe beating system at the University of Oregon were dangerous have been cir culated. Inquiries, have been made of The Journal as to the truth or falsity Of these charges, for the sake Ot the Peace of mind of the parents having Children in attendance at the state pniverslty. The Journal has investi gated' these charges as well as other Ohargea of a t similar nature and has Come to the conclusion that the Charges .are baseless and have 'been Inspired by malice. v Tile best proof of the inaccuracy of these charges is shown by the fact tnat ' after & thorough Investigation mad of these boilers on April and 10, 1917, by C. D. Thomas, working ender the direction of - C. B. Paddock, Chief Inspector for the Hartford Steam Bolter Inspection eV Insurance com pany, they were pronounced safe. The state has made all repairs suggested ln the report and the boilers have been Insured for HOiOOO. The report of the examining engineer la as fol lows: Internally Thin scale was observed On the shell plates, heads and tubes Of all boilers. ' Oil was also noted on sides of shell- plates and along the water line. Some corrosion, due to age ana service, wee perceptible in boilers Nos.-l and 4. but nothlna of a serious nature waa detected. Light pittlhg waa noted on flanges or aeama. All braces are sound and taut and the openings to outside attachments are clear. . . Externally No Important defects were noted on the exposed parts. The seams and tube ends show no evi dence of movement or distress. Fur nace walls of boilers ot Nos. S and 4 need light ' repairs. - The castings around openings of fire doors are badly burnt' and warped, these should be renewed, or a substitute, known as steel " mixture blocks, should replace same. The letter will cost more but will prove the more economical on account of their lasting Qualities. All team gauges were 'tested and - the necessary corrections Were, made. All gauge cocks should be kebt in eood repair. It Would be advisable to re new all blow-off-pipes during the summer Vacation. AH other various appurtenances were found in order.
