Heavy damage has been Inflicted by British airmen upon aerodromes, railway lines and military depots behind the Ger man lines Mi Belgium, It was officially announced today. Six men who said they were brought to this city from Los Angeles as "sub stitute platform men" for the United Railroads in the carmen's strike were freed on J75 bail ach today, follow ing their arrests for carrying concealej Tacoma. Wash.. Aug. 17. ( L P.) The price of coal In Tacoma has ad i vanced on an average of S2 a ton since ' spring. There is no Immediate hope i of prices coming down. Before the i winter is over, it may be hard to get coal at all. From the operators comes the ex- planatlon that the rise in prices is attributable to the tremendously in creased cost of production. A number of mines have been compelled to close down, they say, because of the high cost of operating and because men are weapons. Although It Is claimed men are still not available, even at high wages, being Imported, there was little change 1 - today in car service, which was about 10 per cent normal. PASSES UP CHANCE TO BE MAYOR OF N. Y. Mill and Lumber Near Auburn Burn The Pacific Waste Co., a Portland firm, has purchased the Spokane wool e.i mills and will operate them here after. W. L. Crowe, president, and W. W. uownarfl, secretary-treasurer of th Portland concern, returned today from siokane, where t.ie deal was consum mated. A two set mill equipped for carding and spinning is to be added, and the plant is to be improved and operated to full capacity. D The sawmill and 200.000 feet of lum ber belonging to State Representative W. J. Lunn. near Auburn, was de stroyed early today by a fire which Is believed to have been of incendiary origin. The loss Is $20,000 with no Insurance. The fire had gained con siderable headway when discovered by the night watchman. The mill had been running- with a small crew for some time In spite of efforts of the I. W. W. to bring about a strike. Ford Incorporates New Tractor Plant Detroit. Mich.. Aug. 17. (U. P.) Henry Ford today Incorporated his new tractor plant for 11.000,000. The papers show that the stockholders are himself, his wife and his son. Edsoel. Japanese Steamer, Overdue, Is Ashore Ssi Francisco, Aug. 17. (U. P.) The Japanese steamer Kotahira Maru, with a cargo of Japanese and Chinese merchandise bound for San Francisco aboard, went ashore July 27 on Ami chitka island of the Aleutians, accord ing to a cablegram received from the first officer by the marine department or tne Chamber or Commerce today. The cable did not mention the fate of the crew of 40, but it is supposed they were saved. The vessel was due here two weeks ago. and had been given up for lost. She is commanded by Captain Shlbuya. (I. N S.) The senate this afternoon agreed to the new wine taxes, expected to raise 121.000,000. in the revenue bill, despite Senator Phelan'a objection. The question may be reopened, how ever, before the bill comes to a final vote. Senator Hardwlck this afternoon Joined the opposition to the war prof its tax proposed by the senate finance committee. He declared It unjust and predicted It would seriously jeopardize the cotton milling interests of the south. He said the southern cotton mills had lean years before the war. and that it was unfair to tax their profits on a pre-war basis. Capt. F. McColloch Weds at Palo Alto Word was received In Portland to day of the marriage of Frank McCol loco, oromer oi Liauae Alccolloch, a Portland attorney, and Miss Elizabeth S. Government Plan of Insurance Opposed Washington. Aug. 17. (I. N. S.) The "old line'' insurance companies have declared war on Secretary Mc Adoo's Insurance system for the new national army. This became apparent when the hearing on the bill before the senate interstate and foreign com merce committee opened today. Secretary McAdoo.
