Portland's entry In th! boy championships, also won handilv with the- result that this afternoon it will be Portland against the northwest for the titles. - : r . Is Great Hatch - Thev Steffen-White match wa un doubtedly th greatest exhibition seen here in years. It excelled the Goes Richardson match of last , year over which tennis fans had only Just quit talking. It was a battle. White was a second Richardson. To tennis players that means he Is a fox He Is crafty, arteady and cool. He has no service, no drive. He does nothing but get 'em and get em back. Paul ; Steffen had never been up against such a game. He lost the first set 4-1. Br ah farp h tnnlr tha second 7- and then eased into White's game agam to lose the third s-Z. He re membered he had a vicious drive and he began' to use It. He won his first game handily, but lost the second on four driven ball that went out on him. - He saw the wisdom of that game though, and stuck to It. It brought him home victor in that set 0-4 and tied up the match. And then came the great fifth set. White won the first three games. Steffen took .two. Then White came back and took two more. With the score 5-3 It looked as though the match was all but over. , But for those who reckoned that way ther was a surprise coming. They reckoned without the Steffen heart, the heart that made Willie Ritchie a great boxer, and ; which is . making Paul Steffen a great tennis player. : V Shows righting Spirit ' Steffen settled down to fight. He gritted his teeth . and sailed in. He went to the net on "every balL He took the net and kept it. Wher th would have sat back and clapped their hands and then headed for tea, the new xana, yeiiea. Tney couldn't re strain themselves longer. They let out one big yell and then grabbed Paul Steffen. f He received one real ovation. Whit came In for his share too. for he played a wonderful game. : While Steffen was battling in No. 1 court, his partner. Phil Neer, was go ing through MllUngton Grey of Seat tle right back of him. Neer had little trouble. He couldn't get his mind off of Steffen and tha-fact that he was having a hard time.
