The directors cut . the player limit to 1$ men and ordered a retrenchment In sal- arles in order to keep baseball ft going1 throughout the year. Portland players were notified that their contracts had been cut from 25 to $80 per month, the same as players In other clubs. HERE'S SALT LAKE'S SILENT LEADER By It. A. CronJn Manager waiter McCredle, of th? Portland Beavers, yesterday practi cally closed with Scout Bobby Qulnn of the St. Louis Americans for the sale or inimeiaer K.enneth Williams for a cash consideration and a pitcher. Also, Scout Joe Kelley, of the New xork Americans, wired Manager Mc Credie that he would be In Portland jn a few days and asked that Portland Bold off on any deal for Shortstop Charley Hollocher until he had time to talk over arrangements for his transfer to the Yankees. McCredie ays he Is ready to sign up with New York. first to Be Given Ont These two deals are the first to be announced In the Coast league this sea son, indicating the demand for the two Portland stars. Also, it is the first time McCredie will have give.i options on his promising players bj early In the season. Last year he held off on Louie Oulsto until after mld summer before selling him to : the Cleveland club. Both deliveries wul be made for next spring. Manager Mac would probably not have made arrangements to sell Wil liams and Hollocher but for the fact that his pitching staff needs bolster ing at once. Both the Browns and the Yankees have agreed to send out play era to strengthen the Beavers. Pitcher Will Come at One From Fielder Jones, McCredie will get a pitcher at once, and the new comer is said to be able to deliver the groods. For obvious reasons McCredie is withholding his name. The New Tork club says that it has men fo any position that McCredie wants filled. His toll from the Yankees will probably .be a pitcher Inasmuch as Catcher Baldwin, a promisinj youngster from Spokane, arrived yes terday morning ready to don a uni form. He came in ah deal which senv Pitchers Helfrlch and Fltspatrick and Infielder Stumpf to the Indians. "Fielder Jones wants an outfielder who can clean up the bases," sail Bcdut Quinn last night, ''and that is why we are buying Williams. Tho Portland center fielder looks promis ing and I think he will be a great help to Jones. He can cover plenty o' ground in center field, which la what Fielder wants, and besides he can wal lop that old apple, which Is more to Fielder's liking. Williams strikes mo as being able to hit the left handerj as well as the right handers and I like his position at the plate. Of course, we can get lots of finished fielders, but it is the fellow who can hit the ba 1 against the fences that the managers want nowadays. O lad for Chance at Alliance I am glad to see Portland and St. Louis working together. Fielder has a great Interest In Portland and Its ba'.l club, for he makes this city his home. He will do what he rn to strengthen Portland. We know what the Port land alliance did foi Cleveland, and If the local magnates are favorable, we would like to step right Into the shoes formerly held by our neighbor in tni American .league." McCredie said that New York had an abundance of material to exchange for Hollocher and the player or play ers who will figure In the swap wi.l be discussed when Kelley arrives. It Is likely, however, that the man from New York will not be finally selected until the pitcher arrive from St. Louis. If Baldwin falls to catch the managerial eye. New York may b called on for a catcher. Although Mc Credie did not sav that Joe Gedeoi was considered in the deal, he did in timate that he would like to have hard- bitting Joe. Feok May Flay Second In view of the fact that Roger Peekinpaugh, also a graduate of the McCredie classes, is adjudged .mang the three best shortstops in the Ameri can league, it would seem surprising that New York would also want Hollo cher, but McCredie stated that Man ager Bill Donovan may have plans to switch Peekinpaugh to second baso and play Holly at short. Or, there i3 such a thing that Donovan may feel Peekinpaugh is flipping and wants to be prepared for any eventuality. At any rate the options given the Browns and the Yankees will come in for a lot of discussion. The lack of attendance 'at the Portland games on acoount of the weather, and low stand ing; of the Beaver ha made it prac tically Impossible for the McCredies to go into the open market and pur chase high priced players, holding their stars for the spirited bidding in the fall, which would without a doubt bring a better price. McCredie says he has no apologies to ' Pittsburg- in selling the two youngsters, as the Pi rates have nothing to offer him. vev pt" A. is 4 ' ' 1H " At Miss Cowells Wins Golden State Swim Saa Francisco. Brothers Are Eivals On Eastern Tracks A feature on the eastern tracks this season Is the rivalry between Tommy McTaggart and his brother Johnny These two crack jockeys opened the season at Jamaica, and their first hot race was won by Tommy, who rode Top o' th' Morning home ahead of Johnny, aboard Ormesdale. At that Tommy only won by a nose. A day or so later Johnny evened tip the corn by riding home ahead of Tommy on Corn Tassel. , Tha McTaggart boys are, without a doubt, "major league" stars In the jockey league.
