The steamship Mongolia of the Atlantic Transport line, was attacked twice b German submarines, once crossing the Atlantic and the second time return ing, according to the story told at an Atlantic port Sunday by the U. S. naval gunners assigned to protect the vessel on the high seas. The steamship, the gunners are con fident, had a narrow escape from be ing sunk on the return voyage. They related that while off the Scilly lslanJs about midnight on the night of Mav 4 and with the moon shrning, the fok- out discovered the white wake of a torpedo extend Itself across the bows. stretching from right to left. The missile, it is declared, passed close to the vessel. Submarine Hot Seen. The gunners sprang to their pos'- tlons and brought their defense gun to bear on the spot whence the tor-; pedo was supposed to have come. No sign of a submarine, however, could be seen. The gun was discharged and a careful watch maintained for some time but the submarine gave no fur ther evidence of its presence. On the voyage over the gunners said they saw the conning tower of a U-boat off the port bow and the six inch stern gun was fired, the tower, however, having disappeared in the meanwhile. Then a periscope projected itself above the water off the star board bow and the gunners fired again. The periscope immediately disap peared and above the surface of the water there arose a white gas or vapor. The gunners are convinced from this that they succeeded in send ing one of the kaiser's U-boats to the bottom of the sea for good. TJ-Boat Dives Under X.lner. The gunners were confident the at tack on the way over was conducted by only one submarine and that she dived right under the Mongolia in order to secure a more advantageous position from which to launch a torpedo. The Mongolia's gunners number 17 men, under command of Lieutenant Ware. U. S. N., They include men making the best record at target prac tice In the Atlantic fleet. They could hardly repress their pride In telling of their exploits.
