What one motorcycle patrolman is able to accomplish in upholding traf fic laws Is shown In the report made to the police bureau by Patrolman Frank Ervln. It is a condensed diary of a motorcycle policeman, with a hun dred thrills and mile-a-minnte chases left out. Exactly $7246 was assessed by the municipal court in fines on the arrests made by this one officer In one year. The number of arrests made was 698, the majority being for speeding, al though nearly every variety of traffic offense was represented. The report Is an effectual reply to criticism made in most cities employ ing motorcycle police officers, which alleges tihat favoritism la shown in en forcing traffic laws. Patrolman Ervin'o report of arrests goes into every walK of life, business and profession that might reason ably be expected to endow Us follower with an automobile. Chauffeurs hea.d the list with 288, but It Is reasonable to suppose that this occupation la given by many who desire to conceal their business Identity. Out of over 1700 cases that Ervln has handled during the past aeveral years, only one case has been lost and that one through a jury trial In police court. This record is unexcelled in any other city in tne United States. Eighty-five per cent of the offenders entered a plea of guilty in open court. Maxwell Oars Will Hald Mileage Test In order to find out the greatest mileage possible to be obtained with one gallon Of gasoline in a Maxwell touring car, the Maxwell Motors Cor poration Is offering J5000 In gold to be given away In 15 prizes among Max well distributors and dealers for the best record made. May 23 has been set aside for the gasoline company proof day and prac tically every Maxwell distributor n the United States will participate in the record breaking contest. Recently a record of 46.5 miles to one gallon of gasoline was made by Clarence Brad shaw in San Diego. Individual gasoline tanks that will be furnished by the Maxwell company will be fastened to the windshield and attached to the carburetor so as to make an accurate test. Each run la to be officially observed in every city where the run Is to 'be made. C. la. Boss, of Boss & Peake Oo., of this city, has entered the contest and will make every effort to win first prize. Announcement is made by Forest Supervisor T. H. Sherrard of the Ore gon national forest that . the camp grounds at Eagle creek on the Colum bia river highway are In readiness for the 1917 season. Water pipes have been connected up ao that run ning water la available at the various camp sites. New tables for use of campers and picnickers have been built and a splendid parkins place for automobiles has been conveniently lo cated near the entrance of the camp grounds. Over 15,000 people visited the grounds in 1916 and it Is expected that several times that number will do so this year. The picturesque Eagle creek trail, butlt last year by the forest service, leading up the can yon from the camp grounds, has been cleared of the few windfalls and slides of winter and is now open for a dls tance of four and one-half miles. A high bridge has been built acrosc Eaple creek where the trail now ends, and It Is expected that the trail will be completed to Wahtum lake during the coming field season. This will open up some very attractive country that Is now Inaccessible and make possible a fine 27-mlle hiking trip from the Columbia highway at Eagle creek camp grounds up the Eagle creek canyon and over the divide to Wahtum lake, returning to the high way at Herman Ranger station by way of Herman creek trail. The O-W. R. A N. company has erected a station at Eagle creek which is now a flag stop the same as Mult nomah Falls, so that parties may visit the camp grounds by highway or by rail. Pacific Highway Ass'n Will Convene For the purpose of emphasizing the need of Improved highways in the gen eral scheme of national oreoaredness a special meeting of the Pacific assoia' tlon win be held In Seattle tomorrrv.
