One of those '"two-bit gas meters saved the life of Henry Lockmeyer, a lodger at 223 Fifth street. Thursday, when he attempted to commit suicide. A a re sult of the discovery that some one had broken down the door of the build ing housing the twin reservoirs of Pendleton water plant, superintend ent F; B. Hayes Thursday stationed two armed guards at the reservoirs and they will be kept there day and night during taie war to prevent pos alble damage. A guard Is also kept at the intake of the water system. Word waa received that, Hermlston -'has organised a home guard to protect the government works on the Uma tilla project. The government already has armed guards at the reservoir. . Recruiting: Is picking up fat here. During the week ended Thursday, 18 . naval recruits were sent to Portland " from Pendleton and half that many to the army. New recruits Thursday were Walter A. King of Pilot Rock and G. E.
