Waste paper worth thousands of dollars' 1b burned annually In Portland, and it is the purpose of the Patriotic Conservation league, under whose aus pices waste paper day has been ar ranged, that the money ordinarily wasted shall be put to some good cause. It is pointed out that the first inducement is the cash payment to those who carry the paper into the fire stations of their neighborhoods and the second, the patriotic work' of the league which win sell the paper to the paper, mills and use the money in come of its various enterprises. Will Xezndve Paper Quickly. Arrangements have been perfected for the promt t removal of the paper from the fire stations. Last year the removal of paper to the central ware house was looked after by the- fire department, but it was found that this not only required a 30-day period, but that it was Inconvenient at the englno houses to have tons of paper stored about. ' : i . ... WEL HAS S BENSON AND YEON START SUIT TO STOP DEFAMATORY STORES Members, of Highway Com mission Ask "Show Down" to Determineuthor. Albany, Or., April 5. Alleging that a communication published in the Lebanon Criterion, March 23, was "false, slanderous and defamatory," S. Benson, chairman of the state high way commission, and John B. Teon. roadmaster of Multnomah county, have begun -two actions in the circuit court against W. C. Depew, publisher of the Criterion, and B. F. Steen, the author of the communication. Each of the plaintiffs, asks judgment in the sum of $10,000 against the two defendants Jointly and severally. The .communication on which the suits are based was as follows: Story as Published. In the last issue of the Criterion appeared the statement that State Gran are Master Spence and Tax Liber ator" Smith were alleged to be in the pay of the timber interests to lower taxes, and that this would explain tl.eir motives in opposing the road bond issue. I know little of Mr. Smith but Know much of Mr. spence, and can assure you that nothing he has said or done could be construed in such a light, end that the statement is with out fact or foundation. Mr. Spence is in the pay of the grange and no one eise, ana nas served tne tanning inter, ests of Oregon lovallv and well. If we are looking for motives It is very probable that Mr. Spence wants to see the state of Oregon receive one dollar of worth for every dollar of tax money expended. Instead of divid ing; 50-60 with Teon, Benson and other share holders in the Warren Construc tion company, as was done in Multno mah and other counties. -Connection za Alleged. Another "motive" might be that tho present issue will only make a begin ning on the roads it is supposed to finish. It also seems rather strange that no mention was made of the fact that one of the principal backers of the bond issue was also one of the principal defendants in the notorious Benson-Hyde timber land fraud. This is a matter of court record and not alleged." . - B. F. STEEN.., Explaining' his reasons for bringing a libel suit, S. Benson said today r "For months past evil minded persons have been Industriously, circulating the re port that Mr. Teon and myself have a financial interest in the Warren Con struction company, and furthermore. that I am the Benson who was In dicted by the federal government in connection with .land -frauds. ' The ob ject of these. reports Jwas evidently, to discredit our errorts ln'tne way or highway Improvement.- ' t "So persistent is this propaganda of defamation have determined to call for a showdown In order1 to ascertain who Is responsible. , We ate tired of the continued misrepresentation,' Our attorneys have been instructed, to se cure an early trial, in order to- have the matter disposed of before, the elec tion on the road, bond issue is held, as the charges are evidently Intended to prejudice the election.',' . , , She made up a mixture of Sage ,iea ana buipnur to. bring back color, gloss and youthfulness.
