The normal training classes of the Multnomah, County C. K. Union Mis sion Study Drive Started TumOw eve ning at the Y. M. O. A. under the .able leadership of J. F. Kwltig. Mrs. M. A. Snenhower. and Mis Violet Johnson - In spite of the stormy weather dur ing te eevning. over a third of the county's senior societies and a third Of the Junior societies were P aented. It is believed that with the enthuaiasm manifested, the success of the drive is assured. Already several mission study classes have been started in the various societies throughout tne county and the members are showing great Interest in the mission study, it is expected that et the next meeting a decided Increase will be shown. , ' Other societies will, it is anticipated, catrh the spirit and appoint leaders to attend the classes, and it is believed that the drives goal; a mission study Class in every society by March 31. will be reached. Miss Violet Johnson has charge or the Junior training class. It is tak ing up the book entitled "The Land Of the Golden Man" which is an in teresting book for the younger Chris tian Endeavorers. It is advisable that all Junior superintendents who can should .Join the Junior training class, many new and beneficial sugges tions can be gained from the study of this little book. The senior training classes are tak lngL up the book "South American Neighbors" by Homer C. Stuntz. As is well known, South America is a very interesting country to etudy. Classes in Individual societies will find in it a great source of interest and educa tional value. : , Some of the societies are holding : their mission study classes during the week, whlje others are Incorporating the mission study with their regular Sunday evening prayer meeting, in etead of the regular C. K. prayer meet ing topics. These classes are to con- tlnue for six weeks. The. normal training classes for the leaders of these mission study classes in the various societies are being held at the Y. M. C. A. eveiy Tuesday and Friday evenings from 6:30 to 7:45 p m. These classes-end February 16. ' Bishop Sellew at First F. M. TO Presbyterian Bodies Will Hold Assemblages at Which to Consider Church Efficiency The Presbyterian churches of Port land are planning a series of meetings for the men of the church to consider methods of financial efficiency in the local churches. A meeting was hela today at the Y. M.C. A. with C. N ie 1. m. ... I n charge at which leading two different churches of Wonacott i men from the city, arranged for a series of four) meetings on J'Church Efficiency." j These meetings, will be held once a week during February to discuss best i methods of carrying on the financial work in the local churches. The con ference will be in charge of Dr. A. J. Montgomery. Three men from each church are asked to be present at these conferences. On February 25. the Presbyterian ministers of the city will, exchange pulpits, and all will speak on some phase of the general topic, "Church Finance." This is in preparation for the every member financial canvass, which will take place in most of the churches on Sunday afternoon, March 4. This plan was followed a year ago with greet success, and satisfaction, and the Presbyterian unanlrrtously de cided to follow the same plan this year. Dr. Dean Against the First Baptist Rev. John M. Dean, D. D., who has been conducting special meetings n't the Y. M. C. A. this week, will again occupy the pulpit of the First Baptist church on Sunday. His sermons' last Sunday at this church were interesting and the meetings at the Y. M. C. A. throughout the week will undoubtedly mean an increased attendance at the achurch services, as It will be the closing Sunday of Dr. Dean's stay in Portland. His morning topic will be "The Secret of Greatness" and in the evening his subject is "The Runner." It is planned to have an orean re- j cital preceding the evening service I once each month; this was scheduled j for last Sunday, but was necessarily postponed . Charles Endeavor Society Is Very Wide Awake A very wideawake Christian En deavor society of this city is the Woodlawn Christian Endeavor society. At their last meeting, January 28. they had in attendance, at the Sunday prayer meeting 40 members. Next Sunday evening they will celebrate Christian Endeavor Decision. In con nection with the regular prayer meet ing they will have a special- mission ary program covering the subject "Life Lines Across the Sea," tinder the auspices of the Woman's North Pacific board. ( MORE UNIFIED K SUNDAY SCHOOLS - IS THE OBJECT SOUGHT Multnomah Association Will " Hold Its Annual Convention March 20 and 21. Tho Multnomah County Sunday School association will hold its annual convention' March 20 and 2!, in the First Methodist church, at which prob lems confronting Sunday schools will be discussed and plans formulated for more effective and unified work in the future. Bishop Hughes will make the prin cipal address and among the laymen to speak will be Professor Ball of the Franklin high school. In any projecf ib will be shown hearty cooperation is 'essential to the best results and in no enterprise is this mere true than in Sunday school work. It is with this conviction as to the necessity of loyal support that the Protestant Sunday schools of Multnomah county have united, in time past, in a regular an nual convention. A. Ralph Spearow, secretary-treas urer of the organization, and J. Earl Else, M. D., president, appointed, on the committee of arrangements, are exerting indetatlgable erxorts in bring' ing about a successful and enthusi astic gathering. Among those lend ing unstinted help to the committee are C. A. Rice, E. Earl Felke, super intendent of the boys' work of the association, and Mrs. M. A. Danen hower, in charge of girl" work and education. Although the program Is as yet In its preliminary stages, a good many interesting and instructive features are promised, including an illustrated talk on the Philippines and a banquet in the church auditorium. Dr. Boyd, Optimist, To Tell Why He's One "A Word of Encouragement to the Disheartened and Perplexed" will be Dr. Boyd'a subject tomorrow morning. One of the best things about the pas tor of the First Presbyterian church is his persistent optimism and this mes sage will declare the basis and ground of this cheerfulness. At its annual meeting- Tuesday evening, January 30, the congregation of the Millard Avenue Presbyterian church re-elected Rev. W. H. Amos to serve as pastor for another year. Dr. John H. Endeavorers Here to Observe Decision Day Oregon Endeavorers will Ht close "Endeavor Week" by spe- cial services Sunday, Decision' Day, which is to be observed all over the United States. Oregon Endeavorers have' carried out a bigger program this last week -for the celebra- tion of the anniversary of Christian Endeavor than ever before. At Sunnyslde Congregational Church the Endeavores will have entire charge of the evening church services. Miss Gertrude Aiken, quiet hour su- perlntendent of the state of Oregon, who lives at Salem, Ward Robinson. Miss Violet Johnson, Elwyn Marston and David Jack will be the speakers. " I Average Man's Religion, Theme On Sunday morning at 11 o'clock the rector of St. David's church. East Twelfth and Belmont, will preach a sermon on "The Religion of the Aver age Man." The number of the "aver age" man is legion. Why he beHeves what he does, and acts . as he does, will be the questions the preacher will endeavor to answer. At night, 7:30 o'clock, the rector will give a second illustrated lecture, the subject being "The New World," based on a book written by Dr. Gray of New York. The lecture last Sun day night was well attended and the pictures very illuminating of the sub ject. A Bhort service precedes the lecture. The third and last lecture will be gtven on the following Sunday. Will Fill Pulpit Of Calvary Church Dr. R. W. Farquhar will fill the pul pit of the Calvary Presbyterian church, both morning and evening Sunday, In place of Rev. Wallace H. Lee of Al bany college. Owing to previous engagements made before he was called to fill the vacancy left by Rev. Oliver S. Baum. Mr. Lee has been absent for the last two Sun days, but will preach a week from Sunday and from then on until some one is found to take the charge permanently. The mission study class for women has been meeting in the church every Thursday afternoon, and is much in terested in the study of "Our South American Neighbors." The class is being led by Mrs. Bell K. Spencer. Special Services in Dr. Dyott's Church Special services will be held every Sunday in the First Congregational church durlngthe' month of February. Dr. Luther t. Dyott, the pastor, will discuss "Prayer" as his general theme. The special theme next Sun day evening will be "The Psychology of Prayer."
